The CW’s version of The Flash will complete its final run in February, and it’s bittersweet for the fans who are having trouble with saying goodbye. It has been announced that the ninth and final season of the Arrowverse series will be premiering on the network on Wednesday, Feb. 8, where it will lead into the midseason premiere of Kung Fu. Per TVLine, the ninth season consists of 13 episodes.

In a statement, The CW’s president of entertainment, Brad Schwartz, said: “The Flash will be remembered as one of the greatest shows in the history of The CW, and everyone involved in its excellent nine-season run should be very proud. The team has delivered an epic final season, filled with plenty of twists, guest stars and surprises that will delight every fan. Now is the time to catch up and enjoy this fantastic final ride alongside the fastest man alive.”

Additionally, the network has also released an official synopsis for the new season. It teases a “new adversary” who will be putting Barry Allen to the ultimate test before The Flash comes to its end. You can read the synopsis below.

“After defeating the Reverse Flash once and for all, the ninth season of The Flash picks up one week later following their epic battle, and Barry Allen (Grant Gustin) and Iris West-Allen (Candice Patton) are reconnecting and growing closer than ever before. But when a deadly group of Rogues descends on Central City led by a powerful new threat, The Flash and his team… must once again defy impossible odds to save the day. A deadly new adversary rises to challenge Barry Allen’s heroic legacy. And in their greatest battle yet, Barry and Team Flash will be pushed to their limits, in order to save Central City one last time.”

The Flash Will Have a Proper Ending, But Fans Aren’t Ready Yet

Some fans are expressing their sadness of The Flash coming to an end, looking back upon the years they’d spent watching the series up to this point. Getting a date on the board for the final season is making it feel that much more real for those fans.

“I’m unwell … it’s hitting now that a date has been announced,” one fan says.

Another writes, “Show carried my childhood. I’ve rewatched countless times. Gonna be sad when it ends.”

And as another puts it, “this is gonna be sad when it ends man.”

While some fans may have been hoping for The Flash to return for season 10, the good news is that the series won’t be ending with an unsatisfactory cliffhanger. After it was announced that season 9 would close out the series, star Grant Gustin addressed the news with an Instagram video where he stated that they are going to finish the series on their terms, suggesting that they’ll be building up to a way to close out the story as they see fit.

“I’m really excited to get to do this one more time, finish on our terms,” Gustin says in the video. “I’m going to enjoy every minute of it, as much as I can and I wanted to say thank you from the bottom of my heart for supporting the show and allowing us to go as long as we have.”

He added, “Thank you again for supporting us. I hope you enjoy this last season. I know I’m going to enjoy making it.”

The Flash will debut its ninth and final season on The CW on Wednesday, Feb. 8, 2023.
