‘The Last of Us’ Season 2 Reviews Confirm Show Doubles Down on Trauma

The Last of Us Season 2 reviews are pouring out ahead of the show’s premiere this weekend, and it seems like it will be living up to fans’ lofty expectations. Starring Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey, HBO’s hit video game adaptation is splitting the award-winning second video game installment, The Last of Us Part II, into at least two new seasons, the first of which is being praised for its unfiltrated approach to the most controversial elements of the franchise.

Most reviews range from all-out praise to a mostly positive consensus that seemingly hinges on the response to the season’s hard-hitting storyline that spills over to Season 3. Collider gave the new season of The Last of Us a 10/10, concluding that it “has its own unique set of challenges that the first season never had to deal with, and yet the story has never been better in Druckmann and Mazin’s capable hands.” It’s undoubtedly a darker, more tragic batch of episodes than the last, which is saying something. IndieWire confirms that The Last of Us Season 2 is a no-holds-barred take on the source material, one that doesn’t provide any easy answers for its record-breaking audience. “Season 2 doubles down on what it asks of its audience, unveiling a challenging narrative filled with challenging ideas — ideas people base their entire lives on, and thus ideas people may struggle to reassess,” Indie Wire says in their review.

Additionally, from Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey as Joel and Ellie, respectively, to new additions like Isabela Merced as Dina, the cast is firing on all cylinders, according to the early reviews. Variety has major praise for the show’s version of Ellie, who has a lot more to do this season: “Ramsey in particular to evolve their protagonist from a wise-cracking kid to a deeply scarred young adult.”
