The Office Reboot Is ‘Standing By’ Says NBCU Content Chief

The popular NBC award-winning adaptation of the BBC mockumentary-style series, originally created by Ricky Gervais and Stephen Merchant, may officially be happening after all! Ever since The Office had ended back in May 2016, fans have always hoped for a revival of sorts, so the popular series can makes its return. After an interview with an NBCU Content Chief earlier today, it now seems like it’s definitely a possibility. With the launch of the NBCUniversal streamer, Peacock, and the company’s $500M deal to pull The Office from Netflix, the idea of a reboot was brought back into focus.

Susan Rovner, who is a Chairman, Entertainment Content, NBCUniversal Television and Streaming, had spoke to Deadline at the Edinburgh International TV Festival earlier today. During the panel session, she had initially said “no comment” when asked about plans for a reboot. Susan Rovner then added that it was completely up to Greg Daniels if he wants to move forward with the reboot or not. Greg Daniels is an American screenwriter, television producer, and director who co-created The Office, alongside Steve Carrell.

“Whenever Greg Daniels wants to do one, we’re standing by.” said Rovner in today’s panel session. Back in January, Greg Daniels had told Collider that a reboot of the popular series was not in development at the time, but he did mention that its not impossible for it to happen. “It’s not impossible for sure. I would want to be involved, and I’ve got two other shows I’m working on right now.” Steve Carrell, who starred as Reginal Manager Michael Scott of the Scranton, Pennsylvania branch, was asked by Collider back in 2018 if he would ever like to revisit the character in a reunion or reboot.

“I feel like I’m a broken record, talking about this because I get asked about it,” he said. “The show is way more popular now than when it was on the air. I just can’t see it being the same thing, and I think most folks would want it to be the same thing, but it wouldn’t be. Ultimately, I think it’s maybe best to leave well enough alone and just let it exist as what it was. You’d literally have to have all of the same writers, the same producers, the same directors, and the same actors, and even with all of those components, it just wouldn’t be the same”

Other cast members from The Office have also expressed their interest in revisiting the show including Rainn Wilson aka Dwight Schrute, who also told Collider last year that he would “love” it. “Maybe someday we’ll do something,” he shared. “It’s funny, I hear things like, ‘We can’t do anything because we ended this show perfectly, and we don’t wanna do anything else.’ But then, someone will send some idea that’s just preposterous and I don’t know what to think. Hopefully, one day. The fans would really love it. That’s the thing that counts the most. The fans would really love to see those characters again and have an experience with them.”

Back in 2019, NBCU’s Bonnie Hammer had expressed to Deadline that it was her “Hope and Goal” for the company to do an official reboot for The Office. Could a reboot, or even a reunion finally be on the way? Apparently only time will tell once the company makes the official announcement. The Office ran on NBC from 2005 to 2013. The series starred Steve Carrell, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, Rainn Wilson, Mindy Kaling, Ed Helms, BJ Novak, Amy Ryan, Craig Robinson, Ellie Kemper and James Spader.

The Office was produced by Universal Television in association with Reveille and Deedle-Dee Productions. The original executive producers were Daniels, Gervais, Merchant, Howard Klein, and Ben Silverman, with numerous others being promoted in later seasons. Spanning a total of nine seasons, The Office is currently available for streaming on Peacock. “Bears, beets, Battlestar Galactica.”
