We spoke to actor Tom Hopper at the Space Cadet junket to learn more about his hilarious new comedy about astronauts in training, where he plays a NASA program director in charge of prepping newbies played by Emma Roberts and other peppy performers. Hopper has also kept busy with a much more serious project, The Terminal List: Dark Wolf, a prequel series to Chris Pratt’s hit show that will see the Guardians of the Galaxy star returning as well.
“There’s such a huge fan base for those books,” Hopper told MovieWeb. “I’m a big fan of Jack Carr as an author, and a big fan of the show and of Chris and Dave [DiGilio] and the work that those guys did in the first season. So the process of jumping onto The Terminal List was a long one, you know, like, getting it right for me, like who Raife Hastings is.” Hastings is a former Navy SEAL who Reece met at university and continued a friendship with, and becomes a major character in Dark Wolf; he’s actually the one who provides Reece with a boat in the last episode of The Terminal List. Hopper continued:
I’m absolutely loving being a part of it. It’s an incredible group of people, one like no other. I think it’s because you have so many guys that served in their active and retired Navy SEALs as part of the producing team. You can’t do better than that for authenticity.
“And I’ve just loved every second of it,” continued Hopper. “And I hope that fans will appreciate the Raife Hastings that I bring to life in it.”

Tiffany “Rex” Simpson (Emma Roberts) has always dreamed of going to space, but life isn’t going quite as planned. Determined to turn things around, she aims high and with the embellishing touch of her supportive best friend Nadine (Poppy Liu), her “doctored” application lands her in NASA’s ultra-competitive astronaut training program. In over her head, Rex relies on her quick wits, moxie and determination to get to the top of her class. NASA program directors Pam (Gabrielle Union) and Logan (Tom Hopper) certainly take notice, but can this Florida girl get through training and into the cosmos before she blows her cover?
Hopper also seems to have loved playing Logan in his new film Space Cadet, a smart but socially awkward instructor of trainees who have just joined NASA’s coveted space program. Hopper and Roberts share a number of laugh-out-loud moments as romantic tensions rise during the story. “We had a good laugh, you know, and I mean, she throws you curveballs of lines,” Hopper told us. “So we had a good time playing off each other. It was good.”
Now that Hopper has played an astronaut in multiple projects — Space Cadet and Luther Hargreeves in The Umbrella Academy — did he ever imagine early on that he’d be playing such a fancy day job? “It’s a box to tick, right?” he said. “Although [Logan] never actually gets to do the space thing — he’s always on ground zero, so he’s always at the bottom there — but he still has to go through the whole thing. But no… It was always like — fighter pilot, soldier, pirate, cowboy, you know? You tick the boxes, right? Boys with toys.”
