- Smallville, which ran from 2001 to 2011, was a beloved series that helped pave the way for the Arrowverse and other superhero shows.
- While there are no updates on the Smallville animated series, given the current state of DC Studios, it may be unlikely for another Superman show to be produced. However, fans can still enjoy other adaptations of the character.
As the new DCU gets ready to welcome a new Man of Steel in Superman: Legacy, Tom Welling wears the famous suit once again in new fan art.
It was 2001 when Welling first played Clark Kent in the acclaimed teen series Smallville, which centers in the adventures of a young version of the character as he discovers how to control his abilities and the truth behind those powers, way before officially becoming Superman.
The actor used the famous blue suit at the end of the final season of the show, ending the journey of the character who went from being a shy teenager to becoming the biggest hero on Earth. He then got the chance of returning in Crisis of Infinite Earths, the last major crossover from the Arrowverse, joining a few other DC legends such as Kevin Conroy, Burt Ward or Erica Durance, who also reprise her role as Lois Lane from Smallville.
It’s been 12 years since the show came to an end, but fans still remember it with love, so Instagram user buffy2ville has modernized Welling’s look as Superman along with the rest of the main cast of the series, including Durance, Michael Rosenbaum as Lex Luthor and Justin Hartley as Green Arrow:
Smallville run from 2001 to 2011, and had a total of 10 seasons and 217 episodes, and it was its success which helped The CW make the decision of creating the Arrowverse, which started a year later.

Smallville Could Still Continue with an Animated Series
Warner Bros.
Back in 2021, Welling announced that he was working on a spinoff from Smallville, an animated series that would follow what happened to his character after the end of the show, following the adventures of Clark as Superman in Metropolis.
The project was being developed by the main star and Rosenbaum, who recently reunite in TalkVille, a podcast hots by the two of them recapitulating some of the best moments from the show and talking to different stars that were a part of it.
For now, no news have been shared about the current status of the Smallville animated series and given the current situation at DC Studios, with James Gunn and Peter Safran building their own universe for the future of the franchise, it may be unlikely for another Superman show coming to the screen, since there’s already a live-action version of the character in Superman & Lois and an animated version in My Adventures with Superman.
But considering the enormous success Smallville had, it wouldn’t be crazy for Warner and DC to consider bringing those characters back to tell a new story. For now, fans can still enjoy Jack Quaid and Tyler Hoechlin’s iterations of the Last Son of Krypton while David Corenswet gets ready to play him in Superman: Legacy, which is coming to theaters in 2025.
