Weeds Star Justin Kirk Is Skeptical About Showtime’s Upcoming Revival

The Weeds revival is back on track at Showtime, but one of the show’s original stars isn’t yet convinced that this is the right call. Created by Jenji Kohan, Weeds aired for eight seasons between 2005 and 2012. The series starred Mary-Louise Parker as Nancy Botwin, a widowed mother who turns to selling cannabis when she’s suddenly hard up for cash. Hunter Parrish and Alexander Gould also starred as the Botwin children with Justin Kirk playing her brother-in-law, Andy. Kevin Nealon also starred as Doug, the pot-smoking family friend.

Back in 2019, it was announced that Weeds was getting revived at Starz with a revival dubbed Weeds 4.20. At that time, it was reported that Kohan was not involved, but Parker was set to star and executive produce. The project faded away once the pandemic broke out, but as Variety reported on Monday, the revival is now back on track at Showtime, where it originally aired. According to the revival’s logline, the new show will pick up “with the Botwin family” ten years later now that cannabis legalization has become much more common.

While the returns of the Botwin family has been teased, that may or may not include Andy. Kirk told Variety that he hasn’t heard much more about the Weeds revival than anyone else, suggesting he has yet to even speak with anyone directly about returning for the Showtime revival. The actor also admits he’s leery about the whole thing, wondering if fans honestly want to see older versions of these characters or if it’s just best to leave it be. As Kirk explains:

“Even as a fan, do you really want to see us all old and coming back? By the time of Season 8, I don’t think the general idea was, ‘We should keep doing this!’ Look, I love those people, I love that character. I probably know as much as you do about any future reboots. I know they were talking about it, about what it could possibly be. I had heard rumors of various iterations. Once, I heard about it being a prequel with younger characters, and then you just see us in flash forwards. So I have no idea. Although weirdly enough, I did recently hear of it again, so they may be trying to drag its tired carcass out.”

Do Fans Want a Weeds Revival?

Perhaps because the show has already been announced for a revival that fizzled out at Starz, Kirk also doubts that this planned reboot at Showtime will be any different. He reflects on how there are all kinds of announcements for things like this that always end up falling through and adds that he hasn’t personally been contacted about appearing in the new show. The actor jokes that maybe that means his role has been recast.

“There are a million things that are claimed to be in some sort of development. My agents haven’t mentioned it to me in a long time. Maybe they’re going to recast [Andy].”

Skepticism aside, would Kirk return as Andy if the team behind Showtime’s reboot were to give him the call? Kirk doesn’t have a definitive answer to that question at this time, suggesting he’s open to the idea, but it would still depend upon the creative plans. As Kirk says:

“That is a $64,000 question. I guess we’d have to see what it was. My very favorite piece of narrative entertainment is Twin Peaks: The Return. There is something exciting about seeing the people from something you were into however much older. There’s something cool about that. There’s got to be a story to tell, or some reason to do it. So we’ll see.”
