Who Is Elizabeth Berkley’s ‘Cobra Kai’ Character?

Cobra Kai is back for the last batch of episodes in its sixth and final season. Along with a few surprise characters, including some returning from the original series (both from previous seasons and one new), there’s a new minor character who has a small but pivotal role.

Elizabeth Berkley is best known for her starring role in the teen sitcom Saved By The Bell as well as the movie Showgirls. Fans were surprised to see her pop up in the show. While her character has limited screen time across two of the five episodes, her role is the catalyst for something bigger.

Elizabeth Berkley Plays Minnie in ‘Cobra Kai’

Daniel (Ralph Macchio) and Amanda (Courtney Henggeler) plan a day out to a winery to treat themselves. But when they come across a lonely and depressed Chozen (Yuji Okumoto) at Mr. Miyagi’s (Pat Morita) house, Daniel feels guilty leaving him in that state. Chozen is still heartbroken over Kumiko (Tamlyn Tomita). Making it worse, she finally responded to his declaration of love, noting that she loves him…as a friend.

Amanda is still determined to go to the winery because they need this day. So, she comes up with a brilliant idea: she’ll invite her single friend Winnie (Berkley). She thinks that she and Chozen would hit it off. Winnie loves nature and balance, and they could have a spark.

Fans are delightfully surprised when Winnie arrives and its Berkley. She initially strikes Chozen as annoying, telling him the meaning of his name and that she’s late because she had just completed a Reiki treatment. She believes Chozen will appreciate this since it’s a Japanese spiritual practice. But he’s not impressed. He advises that they have a saying in Okinawa that translates to, quite simply, “Reiki is bulls**t.”

The ‘Cobra Kai’ Cast Member With the Most Martial Arts Experience Might Surprise You

Many characters on ‘Cobra Kai’ are proficient in karate, already or after intense training. But how many of the actors actually know martial arts?

The Significance of Berkley’s Character

Winnie may only appear sparingly, but her character’s role is pivotal in closing off the story for Chozen. Despite the fact that he finds her chatter about healing and crystals and auras to be downright silly, she helps him find clarity. She tries to encourage him to participate in a tarot card reading and, at first, he shows no interest.

They find common ground when they discover they share a mutual love of trashy reality shows, especially Storage Wars. This leads Chozen to finally give Winnie a chance, if only as friends, and she conducts the reading. She draws cards for his past, present, and future. For the past, she finds a deep loneliness. He has had noble intentions, she says, but his path has been challenged by life or death danger, usually of his own making. It’s clear in Chozen’s face that he agrees with this assessment and he’s now curious for her to go on.

‘Cobra Kai’ Season 5 in 3 Minutes or Less

Decades after their 1984 All Valley Karate Tournament bout, Daniel LaRusso and Johnny Lawrence find themselves martial-arts rivals again.

The next one is a death card, and Winnie explains that this isn’t a metaphorical death, but rather that someone he knows is going to die very soon, maybe even more than one person. For those who watched all five episodes, this is indeed true. The final card is the one that brings the most clarity. It’s the Empress card, and she says it tells her that the journey he has been on will end soon and someone who matches his strength and resolve will be “waiting on the other side.” Chozen questions what they will be waiting for and Winnie replies that it’s entirely up to him. It could be a partnership, or even a love match. He admits that there is, just as a flashback to him and Kim (Alicia Hannah-Kim) in Barcelona appears on-screen. “But we are from different worlds,” he says. “It is not possible.”

“The only thing that is not possible, Chozen,” replies Winnie, “is the journey you do not take.” Chozen thanks Winnie for providing this clarity and the two toast. By the end, Chozen has decided to take that leap of faith journey. He travels to Korea where he appears in front of Kim as she is teaching her new Cobra Kai students, bag in hand. She smiles, and it appears that Winnie was right in that his journey has ended, and he has found the person waiting on the other side. It’s implied that he partners with Kim, training alongside her and in a romance.
