Good Omens Season 2 Renewed at Amazon, Michael Sheen & David Tennant Will Return

In a surprising announcement, a second season of Good Omens is now in development courtesy of Amazon. Based on the book by seminal writers Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett, the first series of Good Omens was originally envisioned as a standalone project, but clearly things have changed, with the author inspired to continue the story of Aziraphale and Crowley, an angel and a demon who develop a friendship over thousands of years. Played in the first series by Michael Sheen and David Tennant respectively, Good Omens season 2 will once again follow the mismatched pair as they come across a new challenge even more taxing than stopping the apocalypse.

“It’s 31 years since Good Omens was published, which means it’s 32 years since Terry Pratchett and I lay in our respective beds in a Seattle hotel room at a World Fantasy Convention, and plotted the sequel,” Gaiman explained in a statement. “I got to use bits of the sequel in Good Omens – that’s where our angels came from. Terry’s not here any longer, but when he was, we had talked about what we wanted to do with Good Omens, and where the story went next. And now, thanks to BBC Studios and Amazon, I get to take it there. I have enlisted some wonderful collaborators, and John Finnemore has come on board to carry the torch with me. There are so many questions people have asked about what happened next (and also, what happened before) to our favorite Angel and Demon.”

The new series of Good Omens will once again take place in London, beginning at Aziraphale’s bookshop, when “an unexpected messenger presents a surprising mystery.” As Gaiman explains, “We are back in Soho, and all through time and space, solving a mystery, which starts with an angel wandering through Soho, with no memory.” Along with the two leads, Neil Gaiman is also returning to serve as co-showrunner with Douglas Mackinnon and co-writer with John Finnemore.

Based on Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s 1990 novel of the same name, the first series of Good Omens follows in its printed word predecessor with its presentation and exploration of various Christian themes and figures, all handled with the humor and insight that both Gaiman and Pratchett are well known for. The story follows various characters, all of whom are trying to either encourage or prevent the coming of an imminent Armageddon. Centering on Michael Sheen and David Tennant as Aziraphale and Crowley, an angel and a demon, who over 6000-years have formed a bond that transcends their respective sides in the holy war.

Picking up in 2018, the long-time angel and demon acquaintances have grown accustomed to life on Earth as representatives of Heaven and Hell but must seek to prevent the coming of the Antichrist and thus Armageddon, in the final battle between Heaven and Hell. The first season features a hugely talented ensemble cast including Adria Arjona, Miranda Richardson, Michael McKean, Jack Whitehall, Jon Hamm, and Frances McDormand as the voice of God.

The chemistry between Sheen and Tennant was evident right from the start of Good Omens, so it’s no wonder why Amazon and Gaiman are so eager to return and continue the adventures of the star-crossed angel and demon.

The second season of Good Omens will be comprised of six-episodes, with plans to begin filming in Scotland later this year. This comes to us courtesy of Entertainment Weekly.
