The Orville Season 3 Gets New Title & 2022 Premiere Date on Hulu

After a very long wait, Hulu has revealed the premiere date for The Orville season 3. It feels like the wait for the third season of the former Fox series has lasted forever, as we haven’t seen any new episodes since April 2019. The show has since made the move over to Hulu, and because of the pandemic, filming on The Orville hasn’t exactly been easy. A new teaser from Hulu, which you can watch below, reveals that the third season has been dubbed The Orville: New Horizons, and it’s set to start streaming on March 10.

Created by Seth MacFarlane, The Orville is essentially a spoof of classic sci-fi space exploration shows like Star Trek and its sequel series Star Trek: The Next Generation. The show follows the crew of the starship USS Orville led by MacFarlane as Captain Ed Mercer. Also starring are Adrianne Palicki, Penny Johnson Jerald, Scott Grimes, Peter Macon, Halston Sage, J. Lee, Mark Jackson, Jessica Szohr, and Anne Winters. Guest stars like Liam Neeson, Charlize Theron, Tony Todd, and Rob Lowe have also been featured.

The Orville: New Horizons will also feature one of the final performances of late comedian Norm Macdonald. Though Macdonald passed away earlier this month, he had completed his voiceover work as Lieutenant Yaphit, the gelatinous engineer. Seth MacFarlane was one of the first to pay tribute to Norm after the Dirty Work star’s death with a touching tribute message on Twitter.

“To so many people in comedy, me included, there was nobody funnier than Norm MacDonald,” MacFarlane said. “You always hoped he would hang around after the work was done, just so you could hear his stories and get a laugh. So hilarious and so generous with his personality. I’m gonna miss him.” He was one of many of Norm Macdonald’s famous friends to pay tribute after his death.

When The Orville wrapped filming on season 3, Seth MacFarlane said he hoped this wasn’t the “last time we all go to space,” teasing his desire to make a fourth season. As long as people tune in when The Orville: New Horizons debuts on Hulu, the chances are good another season will be forthcoming. In August, Hulu’s head of scripted originals, Jordan Helman, teased that he saw a future in the show beyond season 3.

“The past year and a half has been complicated on a variety of levels as it pertains to production. I can’t share a launch date, but we’re really excited about what we’ve seen thus far,” Helman told Deadline. “[The] future of the show remains an open conversation and there have been no conversations otherwise. I believe the fans of the show that are coming to us from Fox will be deeply excited and satiated. I also think for new fans that maybe didn’t experience it, it will feel new to them.”

In the age of streaming services, The Orville: New Horizons may even prove to make the series even more popular. Originally, the series premiered on Fox where it aired for two seasons. Season 3 of the show, aka New Horizons, will be the first to premiere on Hulu. The show will premiere on Hulu on March 10, 2022.
