For Richer or Poorer Puts a New Spin on the Reality Dating Show

Fox is officially bringing back Joe Millionaire. The reality dating show that first premiered on the network in 2003 is getting a fresh reboot under the name Joe Millionaire: For Richer or Poorer. Produced by SallyAnn Salsano and Fox Alternative Entertainment, the new spin on the series is set to debut in January 2022.

“This revival of Joe Millionaire represents a potent combination: one of the most innovative and popular dating shows of all time with SallyAnn Salsano, who ranks among the most fearless producers in the business,” Rob Wade, President, Alternative Entertainment & Specials, Fox Entertainment, said in a statement. “I’ve long admired Joe Millionaire for its daring premise, and since the moment I joined Fox, I’ve wanted to bring it back in the spotlight in a whole new way for both new viewers and fans of the original.”

It’s not a tremendous shocker to see Fox trying their luck again with Joe Millionaire. The original show was the most-watched entertainment show in the company’s history at the time of its airing with its season 1 finale drawing in more than 40 million viewers. Television has obviously changed a lot in the years since, but the obvious goal here is for Joe Millionaire: For Richer or Poorer to strike a chord in 2022 the way the first dating show did nearly two decades ago.

In the original Joe Millionaire, Evan Marriott was described to the competitors as a bachelor who’d inherited millions of dollars and was looking for the right person to become his potential bride. The women competing to win his heart don’t know that Evan is not actually a millionaire but in fact a construction worker, and this fact isn’t revealed until the end of the dating competition. If the winner chooses to stay with Marriott anyway, the couple will be surprised with a check for $1 million.

Joe Millionaire: For Richer or Poorer puts a spin on this concept, though the premise remains similar. This time, there will be two men featured on the show, but while one is legitimately a millionaire, the other is not. Twenty women will compete to date both of them with no idea which one has a seven-digit bank account. As each guy narrows down their respective winners, the women will ultimately have to decide if the romance is more important than the money.

There had been a followup season to the original show, called The Next Joe Millionaire, though it wasn’t met with the same high ratings or popularity. Plans to produce additional seasons were scrapped beyond that point, not to return until this new installment. There was also a British version called Joe Millionaire UK that rand between 2003-04, which was hosted by Rebecca De Young with Dominic Lijertwood serving as the bachelor.

SallyAnn Salsano (Jersey Shore) is executive producing the revival with Sarah Howell. The plan is for it to air on the streaming service Tubi after its initial launch. Along with this comes the news that the original series will also be made available to watch on the streaming service. This news comes to us from Deadline.
