Disney’s National Treasure series unveiled a first-look teaser at San Diego Comic-Con today, along with the news that Harvey Keitel will be reprising his movie role for the show. While the series brings a new cast and story to the franchise and has been said to have very few links to the National Treasure movies starring Nicolas Cage, it looks like that may not be entirely true with Keitel on board the series and comments regarding the hope of Cage’s involvement being made by the series’ star.
The short teaser for the series gives a first look at new lead Lisette Olivera, who appears in the series as Jess Morales, who is whisked up into a globe-trotting adventure that sees her searching for a lost Pan-American treasure while discovering long-buried secrets about her own family history. Check it out below.

According to one of the series’ stars, Jake Austin Walker, the show plays out like a 10-hour movie, while this won’t be good news for the like of The Boys’ showrunner Eric Kripke who recently criticized series that act like cut-up movies, this will probably go down well with fans of the franchise who have been waiting for a third movie to come along for some time. While this is not that movie, the addition of Harvey Keitel to the cast in his role of Peter Sadusky, along with the already known return of Justin Bartha as Riley Poole, it is not surprising that the producers are still hopeful of getting Nicolas Cage back to the franchise at some point in the future.

Will Nicolas Cage Join The National Treasure Series?
Walt Disney Pictures
While there is currently no second season of National Treasure: Edge of History, it certainly sounds like executive producers Marianne and Cormac Wibberley are hoping that the series will perform well enough on Disney+ to warrant more seasons, and that could potentially see the return of Nicolas Cage.
While speaking on the panel, Marianne Wibberley was asked if Cage was part of the series, to which she replied, “We wanted him, but he is very busy.” Lead star Olivera followed this up by saying that “maybe” they can get him on board at some point.
Nicolas Cage has previously spoken about the National Treasure franchise and the possibility of the long in development third movie actually happening. Back in May, the producer Jerry Bruckheimer answered a fan query about Cage and the possibility of them working together again. At the time, he wrote, “Absolutely. I love Nicolas, he’s a brilliant actor, and we are currently working on a script for National Treasure.”
While it seems that the series has now taken priority regarding the National Treasure franchise, there has been no official word on where it leaves that possible National Treasure 3 script. If the show does what Disney expects of it, we could end up seeing Cage’s movie character of Ben Gates being incorporated into the story, which is something that fans would really like to see happen.
National Treasure: Edge of History is coming to Disney+ soon.
