Ryan Reynolds Wants to Cameo in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia as Mac’s Boyfriend

Deadpool star Ryan Reynolds wants to unite with his Wrexham A.F.C. co-owner Rob McElhenney on the latter’s hit sitcom, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia. Appearing together courtesy of Buzzfeed, Reynolds states that he would love to cameo in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, with McElhenney knowing exactly how he could make it work.

“I’m personally offended that I was never asked,” Reynolds says regarding appearing in the show, which first premiered on FX all the way back in 2005 and has since had 15 seasons. Reynolds reveals that he and It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star and writer Rob McElhenney have already been discussing potential cameos, with McElhenney replying, “Well…it can be arranged.”

McElhenney even suggests who Reynolds could play should he join the It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia roster saying, “Mac needs a boyfriend.” Reynolds appears to be on board with the idea, responding with a “Great, let’s do it!”

So, now that Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney are officially best friends following their purchase of the Welsh association football club Wrexham A.F.C. back in 2020, with the pair reportedly purchasing the team for $2.78 million, it certainly sounds like It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia could see the A-lister and Deadpool 3 star added to the ranks as a suitor for McElhenney’s character, Mac.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia follows Rob McElhenney, Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton, Kaitlin Olson, and Danny DeVito as a group of narcissistic, sociopathic friends who run the Irish bar Paddy’s Pub in South Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Other than run a successful bar however, they instead spend most of their free time drinking, scheming, arguing among themselves, and plotting elaborate cons against others.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia has proven to be a huge success on FX and FXX, and has now had more seasons than any other American live-action comedy series. Season 15 wrapped up last year, with It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia having since been renewed for four more seasons.

Ryan Reynolds Auditioned for Superman, Rob McElhenney Auditioned for Star Wars

Warner Bros. Pictures

The two actors offer a few other interesting tidbits about themselves in the footage, with Ryan Reynolds revealing that he once auditioned for the role of DC icon, Superman. He would of course join the world of DC in the much-maligned Green Lantern in 2011. While it may be difficult to image the constantly quipping Deadpool actor as the Man of Steel, it is surely even more difficult to image Rob McElhenney as Anakin Skywalker in the Star Wars prequel trilogy.

“I auditioned for Anakin Skywalker,” McElhenney says, before revealing the strange reason he was tossed aside. “I remember them saying to me “it’s not gonna work because he doesn’t have blue eyes.” And I was like “b—h, you’re creating entire armies full of mutant robots, but you can’t change somebody’s eyes?””

Of course, both Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney have found huge success despite losing these major roles. McElhenney is of course busy on the small screen with both the continuing adventures of the gang in It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia and his role in the Apple TV+ series Mythic Quest.

Reynolds meanwhile is due to reprise the role of the Merc with a Mouth in Deadpool 3, which will also see Hugh Jackman return as Wolverine. Deadpool 3 is scheduled for release on Nov. 8, 2024.
