The Wheel of Time Teaser Reveals 2021 Release Date on Amazon Prime

With so much talk about its Lord of The Rings series, Amazon Prime Video’s other big fantasy series The Wheel of Time seems to have been a little lost lately. However, while the new series of Tolkien based action is not due until later next year, The Wheel of Time is drawing very close, as a new 20 second teaser released on Wednesday has revealed. Taking its frame from the works of Robert Jordan, the series promises to be everything Rings and Game of Thrones fans love, and the new reveal also delivered the show’s logo for the first time.

The short video was enough to have thousands of fans flocking to their Twitter accounts to tell the world how great the books are, how long they have waited for the series, and just that they are really, really excited now they know that it will be arriving later this year. With filming being completed in the spring after a Covid19 delay, there was a hope by many that we may see the first season of The Wheel of Time arrive sooner rather than later, I mean not even Amazon would want to pit their two huge fantasy drama series’ against each other, and with Lord of the Rings coming in 2022, it was likely that we would see Robert Jordan’s world come to life on screen before then.

However, news on the series has been relatively quiet. There have been no trailers, and only two very small teases up to now. The cast for Wheel of Time includes Rosamund Pike as Moiraine, Josha Stradowski as Ran al’Thor, Marcus Rutherford as Perrin Aybara, Zoe Robins as Nynaeve al’Meara, Barney Harris as Mat Cauthon, Madeline Madden as Egwene al’Vere, Daniel Henney as Lan Mandragoran, and Michael McElhatton as Tam al’Thor. We have been given small glimpses of Pike and Henney in character, but so far nothing on the others. With the new teaser arriving, perhaps we are not too far away from seeing a full trailer for the series.

The Wheel of Time has a number of parallels with A Song of Ice and Fire, or the Game of Thrones saga, if you prefer. The story is set in a place where “The Breaking of The World” has occurred, an almost apocalyptic event that she had turned the magic of male users sour. A user of magic named Moiraine comes across a group of teenagers in an isolated part of the world and believes that one of them could be a reincarnation of the Dragon, said to be destined to be the savior of the world or its destroyer.

Robert Jordan began writing the series in 1984, although the first book would not be published until 1990, and continued up to the time of his death in 2007, when Brandon Sanderson took over to complete the saga using the outlines and notes left by the late author. While there are many themes and settings that are similar to the work of George R R Martin, there are many fans of A Song of Ice and Fire that are hoping that last bit does not come to be another mirroring event between the two.

Many series’ currently being produced fail to gain a proper fan-base, as many are unwilling to devote their time to something that could be cancelled before it has a chance to begin. For those wanting to get on board The Wheel of Time, there is no such worry, as Amazon have already greenlit a second season. Although the book series was originally planned to be six books long, by the time the last book was released in 2013, the series had grown to be fourteen books long, with an additional prequel novel and two companion books published, so there is no shortage of material for Amazon to work with.

As an additional bonus, they also can avoid the kind of controversy that Game of Thrones drew by having to develop its ending without Martin’s text as a guide. Like many others, we await more word on when the series will begin, but it looks like the wheel will begin to turn in just a few short months’ time.
