  • Milo Ventimiglia on The Company You Keep Character: ‘Very Different from Jack Pearson’

Ventimiglia will portray a con man in ABC’s upcoming crime drama series.

Viewers fell in love with Milo Ventimiglia‘s This Is Us character, Jack Pearson. Through flashback, audiences witnessed Jack’s devotion to his wife and children before his devastating death. Less than a year after the series’ final episode, Ventimiglia is making his return to the small screen for the crime drama The Company You Keep as con man Charlie Nicoletti. A con man seems worlds away from beloved Jack, but Ventimiglia insists there is some common ground between the two. He told TV Insider:

“Charlie is very different from Jack Pearson, but there are some similarities in who they are as men looking out for their families. [Charlie] is a criminal, but he’s a good bad guy. You’re rooting for him.”

The Company You Keep is based on the hit Korean series My Fellow Citizens! It follows the complicated relationship between Charlie and undercover CIA officer Emma (Catherine Haena Kim). While Charlie is looking to reform from his con-man ways, he gets romantically involved with the CIA officer, something that Ventimiglia says leads to a “whole lot of trouble!” As for reforming, Ventimiglia says it may not be the easiest feat for Charlie to pull off:

“He’s a professional liar! Telling the truth is a massive challenge — and a consequence — for Charlie. His blind spot has always been romance. He wants to find love and live a normal life, but he’s not built for it. That’s an incredible complication.”

The Company You Keep premieres Sunday, February 19 on ABC. The network dropped the series’ first teaser late last month. The drama stars Ventimiglia, Kim, William Fichtner, Tim Chiou, Freda Foh Shen, James Saito, Sarah Wayne Callies, Felisha Terrell, and Polly Draper. The Company You Keep was developed by Julia Cohen and Phil Klemmer, and both serve as co-showrunners and executive producers. Ventimiglia, under his DiVide Pictures banner, Caitlin Frito and Ben Younger serve as executive producers.

Through its six-year run, the hit series and its cast received many accolades, including consecutive Screen Actors Guild Awards in 2019 and 2020 for Outstanding Performance by an Ensemble in a Drama Series.

Most recently, Ventimiglia guest starred in one episode of the fourth season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, reuniting with Gilmore Girls creator Amy Sherman-Palladino.
