I Know What You Did Last Summer Sequel in the Works with Original Cast Returning

A new sequel in the I Know What You Did Last Summer franchise will see the return of Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr.

Everything comes around again at some point in Hollywood, and right on time for the 90s revival is news that a legacy sequel to I Know What You Did Last Summer is in the works with original stars Jennifer Love Hewitt and Freddie Prinze Jr. expected to reprise their lead roles. According to Deadline, there has been no comment from Sony on the belated sequel, but their sources have said that the original movie’s producer Neal H. Moritz is also set to return to the franchise, with Jennifer Kaytin Robinson directing and Leah McKendrick scripting.

I Know What you Did Last Summer was released in 1997, coming in the wake of the success of Scream the previous year, and now, ironically, the sequel will be coming after the Scream franchise has seen two of its own sequels released. The film centered on a group of friends who cover up what they believe to be a fatal car accident, and find themselves being stalked one year later by a hook-handed killer. The film spawned two sequels, the first of which featured returning cast members, while the second was a stand-alone straight-to-video movie that only shared a basic connection through a hook-handed killer. Prime Video also aired a short-lived series based on the franchise.

Now it looks like the new movie will become the actually third act in the trilogy, picking up on Jennifer Love Hewitt’s character of Julie James and Freddie Prinze Jr’s Ray Bronson assumedly many years after their story seemed to have ended. With Scream VI heading into theaters soon, Scream 7 already being discussed and other movies such as Terrifier 3 and a new Friday the 13th movie and series in the works, the addition of another I Know What You Did Last Summer sequel means there is plenty of slasher action on the horizon for horror fans.

Does The World Really Need A New I Know What You Did Last Summer Movie?

Considering the original movie was instantly compared to Scream, the question now is whether the same fate will befall a sequel that seems to be once again following the genre defining Scream franchise like a poor relation. The report goes on to note that the idea for the new movie came from both director Robinson and McKendrick, and when pitched to Sony executives, it “blew them away.” Obviously the idea of bringing back some of the original cast will certainly sweeten the deal, as it did when Courteney Cox, Neve Campbell and David Arquette all returned for the fifth Scream movie.

While it is clear that this will not be a reboot but a continuation, the new I Know What You Did Last Summer runs the risk of simply repeating the same story again. With the list of new slasher movies growing rapidly, whether there will still be a place for this sequel another year or more down the line is something that will become clear in time if the film makes it to cinemas.
