Suzanne Somers, who made her name in the sitcoms Three’s Company and Step by Step, as well as showing prowess as an author and businesswoman, has died at the age of 76. The star passed away at her home in Palm Springs, California, just one day before her 77th birthday.

Born on October 16, 1946, Somers showed her desire to become an actress at a young age, but gained her big break when cast as Chrissy Snow in ‘70s sitcom Three’s Company. Despite her clear flair for comedy, which led to her starring The Love Boat, She’s the Sheriff and Step by Step, Somers did not stick to the world of sitcoms, but went on to gain critical acclaim for roles in dramas like Hollywood Wives.

The news of Somers death was announced by her longtime publicist R. Couri Hay, who shared a statement on behalf of her family which read:

“Suzanne Somers passed away peacefully at home in the early morning hours of October 15th. She survived an aggressive form of breast cancer for 23 years. Suzanne was surrounded by her loving husband Alan, her son Bruce, and her immediate family. Her family were gathered to celebrate her 77th birthday on October 16th. Instead they will celebrate her extraordinary life, and want to thank her millions of fans and followers who loved her dearly.”

Suzanne Somers Did Not Settle For Acting Alone.

Not content to limit herself to acting, Somers expanded her range by becoming the author of a series of bestselling books focused on health, wellness and aging. Her book, “Ageless: The Naked Truth About Bioidentical Hormones,” challenged the common view on hormone replacement therapy, and her ability to speak to regular people through her books saw her quickly establish herself as a voice of authority on the subject of natural healthcare.

Somers also became a hugely successful businesswoman and entrepreneur, appearing in infomercials for the ThighMaster muscle-toning device. The ThighMaster, and companion product, the ButtMaster, ended up earning the star an estimated $300 million from just sales alone after she and her husband, Alan Hamel, became sole owners of the products.

Not one to shy away from public view, the actress hit the headlines in 2020 when she appeared “topless” in People magazine, going viral and suggesting that for her 75th birthday she should appear nude in Playboy. It would not have been the first time the actress had graced the pages of the iconic magazine, although her appearance on their pages in the 1970s led to her successfully suing the magazine after they published the shoot against her wishes.

Leaving behind a lasting legacy, both on screen and beyond, Suzanne Somers is another industry veteran that will not easily be forgotten. You can see some of the tributes paid to the star online below.
