Woods, Rahm among notables set to miss cut

Tiger Woods’ first professional round with multiple triple-bogeys will result in the 15-time major champion missing the cut at the PGA Championship.

The four-time PGA Champion carded two triple-bogey 7s over a three-hole stretch early in his Friday round at Valhalla en route to a 6-over 77. That places him at 7-over for the championship – well back of the projected cut of 1-under with play suspended due to darkness Friday.

Friday’s performance was the latest in a series of disappointing results for Woods as he continues to battle a lack of competitive reps on the PGA TOUR. He’s playing a limited schedule due to health issues.

“I need to play more,” Woods said afterward, according to Dylan Dethier of Golf.com. “Unfortunately, I just haven’t played a whole lot of tournaments – and not a whole lot of tournaments on my schedule, either. Hopefully, everything will somehow come together in practice sessions at home and be ready for Pinehurst.”

Woods isn’t the only big name that won’t see the weekend, as Jon Rahm will miss the cut at a major for the first time in 19 starts. The two-time major winner had made 18 straight cuts coming into Valhalla but battled driver issues throughout to finish even over two rounds.

Rahm posted his worst finish ever at the Masters last month and now sees the longest active major cut streak in men’s golf come to an end.

The prime scoring conditions at Valhalla saw the cut line move to a place it’s rarely been in major championships: under par. The cut will fall under par for just the third time ever in major championship history, according to Bob Harig of Sports Illustrated.

Other notables who won’t play the weekend include Wyndham Clark, Phil Mickelson, Matt Fitzpatrick, and Ludvig Aberg.
