For fervent followers of Saturday Night Live, surprises are nothing new. And yet, some moments still manage to catch the audience off guard, leaving them in stitches. This past week provided just such an occasion when the charismatic Pedro Pascal made an unexpected entrance during Bad Bunny’s opening monologue.

As Bad Bunny, the multi-platinum music sensation, was gearing up to deliver his first-ever monologue on SNL, the sequence took an amusing turn. Right as Bad Bunny shifted to speaking Spanish, he decided to introduce a translator for his non-Spanish speaking audience. But, instead of a conventional translator, out walked Pedro Pascal. His role wasn’t just to help Bad Bunny with translations; instead, he humorously delivered “translations” that were more in line with what Pascal himself might have wanted to convey, much to the delight of those in attendance.

The audience’s roaring laughter was unsurprising, given Pedro Pascal’s growing stature as a beloved figure in popular entertainment. Known for riveting performances in television series like The Last of Us and The Mandalorian, Pascal isn’t new to SNL. The episode he led last year was met with significant critical applause.

Recalling his previous experience, Pascal humorously said, “Are you nervous for me? I’m super excited. I think it’s at the top of everybody’s bucket list. I am scared. There’s like a wall of sheer terror I think that you start with, and then it’s such a well-oiled machine. Everybody’s so amazing and talented, and they take these blocks of white hot terror apart for you with big cue cards.”

SNL Season 49: A Blend of Familiar Faces, New Talents, and Unexpected Host Choices

NBC

So, who’s taking center stage in the 49th season of Saturday Night Live? Well, it’s a roster teeming with familiar comedic talents. Mainstays like Michael Che, Colin Jost, Kenan Thompson, and Chloe Fineman are joined by an almost identical cast from the previous season. Newcomer Chloe Troast is the sole fresh face, while the comedy trio “Please Don’t Destroy,” composed of Ben Marshall, John Higgins, and Martin Herlihy, continue their recurring roles, further adding to the ensemble’s comedic dynamism.

However, there’s a twist this season in the choice of hosts. Owing to the ongoing SAG-AFTRA Strike, actors, traditionally a significant source of SNL hosts, are presently off the cards. This is due to the strike’s regulations prohibiting them from making appearances to promote their works. This limitation has paved the way for comedians and musicians to step into the limelight. Pete Davidson, the aforementioned Bad Bunny, and Nate Bargatze have already graced the stage, proving that even in the face of constraints, SNL continues to innovate and entertain.

NBC and Peacock broadcast Saturday Night Live Season 49 at 11:30 PM ET every Saturday for all viewers, old and new. And for those wanting to delve deep into the annals of SNL history, all previous 48 seasons are now available for streaming on Peacock. Given the current trajectory, this season promises more laughs, unexpected appearances, and SNL’s trademark brand of humor.
