Homecoming Fall Victim to Budget Cuts as Both Series Suffer Casualties in Respective Writers Rooms

Summary

  • Superman & Lois and All American: Homecoming have lost writers due to budget cuts, potentially affecting the future of both shows.
  • The fourth season of Superman & Lois only has five writers returning, down from the previous eight, impacting the storytelling for the Kent family.
  • The third season of All American: Homecoming will also have fewer writers, with only seven remaining from the original nine, creating potential changes for the sports drama.

Kryptonite isn’t the only thing that can hurt the Man of Steel. The Writers Guild of America (WGA) strike might be over, but some creatives from the CW have found themselves without shows to work for in the future. According to an exclusive report by Deadline, both Superman & Lois and All American: Homecoming have lost a number of employees from their respective writers rooms.

Superman & Lois will be entering its fourth season when it eventually returns, and that in itself depends on the outcome of the ongoing Screen Actors Guild-American Federation of Television and Radio Artists (SAG-AFTRA) strike. But the Man of Steel’s team will only consist of five writers who will pen the majority of the 10 episodes encompassing season four — whereas there were eight writers before the budget cuts. Adam Mallinger is one of the unlucky writers who won’t be returning, as a staff member, to tell the Kent family’s stories moving forward. Mallinger wrote on X, formerly Twitter earlier this month:

“Disappointing news – due to budget cuts, I won’t be returning on staff at SUPERMAN & LOIS for season 4. I debated saying anything, but I’ve tweeted my way into literally every TV job I’ve had, so it seemed prudent to announce I’m available for staffing.”

The third season of All American: Homecoming will also have to deal with some empty seats in its own writers room. The creator of the television sports drama, Nkechi Okoro Carroll, has to face the fact that her team will only have the services of seven of their original nine writers moving forward.

Superman & Lois Will Look Vastly Different in Season 4

Deadline also reported, albeit without naming an official source, that Superman & Lois’ former writer Adam Mallinger will pen an “episodic script” as a “freelancer,” presumably in season four. Before the SAG-AFTRA strike began, but during the midst of the WGA dispute, the CW still made the decision to announce green lighting season four of Superman & Lois and season three of All American: Homecoming.

Before the CW’s latest take on the Last Son of Krypton experienced today’s reported budget cuts, the superhero series had already taken a couple of hits. First, Season four was reduced to only 10 episodes total. Second, since money is naturally a paramount issue, Superman & Lois was required to lighten the load in other areas before the writers room lost three of its key contributors. So, perhaps the most devastating blow for the series was the loss of virtually every single cast member outside of the core-four Kent family!

Tyler Hoechlin (Superman/Clark Kent), Elizabeth Tulloch (Lois), Alex Garfin (Jordan) and Michael Bishop (Jonathan) are the only series regulars to return in the same capacity for season four. Michael Cudlitz’s Lex Luthor will be promoted to a full-time player, which means fans can only hope that beloved characters like Lana Lang (Emmanuelle Chriqui), her daughter Sarah (Inde Navarrette) and John Henry Irons, aka Steel (Wolé Parks), will return as guest stars.
