A trailer has dropped for Hulu’s Drive with Swizz Beats, a six-episode series that follows the legendary hip-hop producer as he explores distinctive car cultures worldwide. Hitting the road with his eldest son Nasir Dean (also known as Note Marcato), the two embark on a global trek to visit car-loving destinations. On their visits, the father and son duo will also bring together two otherwise disparate car clubs over a shared love of all things automotive and an appreciation for what it’s like to beat the odds through sheer drive alone.
In the trailer, which you can watch below, the Grammy-winning producer shares that his “reputation as a renowned, multi-platinum producer runs parallel” to his passion for cars.
Besides being a legendary figure in the world of hip hop (with hits like DMX’s “Ruff Ryders’ Anthem,” Beyonce’s “Ring the Alarm,” and T.I.’s “Bring ‘Em Out” under his belt), Swizz Beats has also worked with Aston Martin and Lotus, serving as Vice President of Global Design and Creative Marketing for the latter from 2011 to 2013.
Drive with Swizz Beatz was announced by Onyx Collective – Disney’s content brand that primarily consists of projects from creators of color and other underrepresented groups – in August 2022. All six episodes, which see Swizz Beats and Dean travel to Los Angeles, New York, Houston, Atlanta, Japan, and Saudi Arabia, will be available to stream on Hulu on November 16. The Onyx Collective’s Acclaimed Projects
Searchlight Pictures
Disney announced the launch of Onyx Collective in 2021. Upon its announcement, Dana Walden (then chairman of Entertainment at Walt Disney Television) said:
“Our industry is immeasurably enriched by the incredible talents of emerging and established creators of color. Launching Onyx Collective allows us to be the best partners to those creators, providing them with the support they need to do their best work.”
The brand’s first project was musician Questlove’s feature directorial debut Summer of Soul (… or, When the Revolution Could Not be Televised). The acclaimed documentary examines 1969’s Harlem Cultural Festival. It includes interviews, news footage, and recordings of musical performances by greats, including Stevie Wonder, Nina Simone, Sly & the Family Stone, Gladys Knight & the Pips, and B.B. King.
The collective’s most recent project, The Other Black Girl, based on the 2021 novel of the same name by Zakiya Dalila Harris, launched in September. The series follows Nella Rogers, an editorial assistant at an all-white publishing company who is initially pleased by the hiring of Hazel-May McCall, another Black woman. Nella’s emotions about Hazel-May shift as mysterious happenings begin to occur.
Onyx Collective’s other notable credits include the 2022 drama Bruiser, the legal drama series Reasonable Doubt, the Kerry Washington-led Unprisoned, and this year’s The 1619 Project, a docuseries adapted from a New York Times Magazine journalism project focused on slavery in the United States.
