Deborah Ann Woll Shares Her Hopes for Karen Page in Daredevil’s MCU Future

Summary

  • Deborah Ann Woll will seemingly not be part of the upcoming Daredevil: Born Again series in the MCU.
  • Woll hopes that Karen Page, her character, will be honored in future iterations.
  • While Woll may not have a place in Marvel Studios’ future, she could potentially find a role in the DC superhero world.

Daredevil: Born Again will bring a number of former Netflix Daredevil stars into the MCU to join Charlie Cox and Vincent D’Onofrio, but it seems that Deborah Ann Woll will not be one of them. Earlier this year, the actress seemed to confirm that she has not been asked to reprise her role in the upcoming series, and while there is still no official word on the matter from Marvel Studios, Woll has again been hinting that she will not be part of the ensemble, but does hope that the character of Karen Page will live on and “be honored” in any future iterations.

In a new interview with Screenrant for her new movie Faster, Purple Worm! Kill! Kill!, the actress addressed the status of her Daredevil character, and explained that in some way she wants to see Karen Page get her own future in some way.

Look, playing Karen Page was one of the great roles of my career so far. I have such enormous love and respect for her, for myself, for the story that we created together. I think any iteration of Karen that comes back, if she comes back, if it’s me, if it’s not me, if it’s in comic books, if it’s in 50 years, whatever it is, I just hope that it continues to honor her. That you’re never just the sidekick.

You might not see the Karen Page story, but she’s having a whole TV show on her own that no one filmed. Make sure that, for our characters, who are not superheroes or are not the lead fighter in that way, that we just continue to honor that they have full lives. That’s what I really appreciated about my time playing Karen Page, and I would hope that if I got to do it again or if it continues, that people would have the same care for her.

I’m so proud. I really am. I loved working on that so much, and she’s such a cool, cool person. I miss her.

Charlie Cox is ready to don the red suit of the Man Without Fear again for Daredevil: Born Again. After the actor’s appearance as Matt Murdock in Spider-Man: No Way Home and She-Hulk, he will officially debut in the MCU with the new solo series focused on the Devil from Hell’s Kitchen, in a soft reboot of that successful production from Netflix.

Cox will return alongside The Defenders universe stars Vincent D’Onofrio, who already appeared as the big bad Kingpin in Hawkeye, and Jon Benrthal who will reprise his role of Frank Castle as he did in Daredevil and later in The Punisher.

Despite the rumors prior to the start of production on the series, currently on hiatus due to the writers’ strike, it was finally confirmed back in May that neither Woll nor Elden Henson would return for this new adventure. Both were protagonists of the Netflix show with Cox, playing the secretary of Murdoch’s law firm, Karen Page, and Murdock’s best friend Foggy Nelson, two characters who are also very important in the comics.

At the moment, it has not been confirmed if the roles will be played by new actors, such as Vanessa Fisk, who was originally played by Ayelet Zurer and replaced by Sandrine Holt in Daredevil: Born Again. For this reason, fans still hope that the actors are simply not part of the first season, or are one of the surprises that Marvel Studios prepares for the show. But it has become more and more unlikely.

During her Q&A panel at ICCCon in Nashville in May, the actress shared disappointing information about her future at Marvel, after being asked if she’d like to join the DCU (via Twitter user Daredevil Updates):

“Am I allowed to cross the streams? I feel like that would be very dangerous… [T]here’s a few people who can do it. But I don’t know that I’m one of those lucky few. I don’t know about DC. You know, this was so cool, to be a part of this series. And I think, you know, it was such a unique little corner of the MCU that felt really special… I’m really happy with what I’ve had and there’s no, you know, no plans for me so far on either side of the comic book universe… but I’m so grateful for the experience that I had.”

Woll may not have a place in Marvel Studios’ future, but with DC building a new canon with James Gunn, she could easily find some role in the superhero world in the competition. A good choice would be Poison Ivy, a character in which many fans have imagined the actress before.

For now, in addition to Cox, D’Onofrio, Beltran, and Holt, the cast of Daredevil: Born Again includes Michael Gandolfini, Margarita Levieva, Nikki M. James, Michael Gaston, and Arty Froushan.
