David Duchovny Recalls Failing Auditions for All 3 Male Lead Roles in the Full House

Summary

  • David Duchovny auditioned for all three male lead roles in
    Full House
before finding success as Fox Mulder in
    The X Files.
  • Duchovny felt he was not suited for the sitcom comedy required for
    Full House
, but ultimately found success in a different role.
  • Despite missing out on
    Full House
, Duchovny’s career took off with
    The X Files,
where he played Fox Mulder for 9 seasons and two revivals.

David Duchovny found international success playing the role of Fox Mulder in The X Files, but things could have been different if he had landed one of the lead roles in the sitcom Full House. However, as he revealed in his Fail Better podcast, Duchovny did not just miss out on one lead role in the series, but all three of them.

Full House was a hit in the ‘80s, starring Bob Saget, Dave Coulier, and John Stamos in the lead male roles. Although Duchovny became known for more serious roles, before he found success as one half of the FBI’s “spooky” investigating team, he believed that his big break could come in the roles of either Danny Tanner, Joey Gladstone, or Jesse Katsopolis in the ABC sitcom. However, it was not meant to be. He explained:

“I auditioned for all three parts on Full House. At first, they had me for, I think, the dad. And then they had me for the Stamos character. And then they had me for the other guy. I was thinking, ‘I’ve got to get one of these, and it’s going to change my life.’ I had plenty of those pilots that I went up for when I was first out in LA, and I thought each one was going to be the break. I just needed to be able to pay my rent too.”

It seems that Duchovny was well aware of his own shortcomings in his abilities to play the kind of comedy role required for Full House. He added:

“I was really bad at that kind of stuff. I did not know how to do that sitcom stuff. I don’t know what they were thinking, that they thought I was going to exist in that world. I mean, I guess I could have learned, but I wasn’t ready for that kind of, energetic performance that they need.”

David Duchovny Found Fame with The X Files, but is Likely Done with Fox Mulder

Although Duchovny’s attempts to break into comedy failed, things didn’t turn out too bad, especially when he debuted as alien-obsessed Agent Fox Mulder in The X Files several years later. That role would become the one that gave him the break he had looked for in Full House, and would see him continue to play the character throughout the original 9-Season run, two theatrical movies, as well as two revival seasons in 2016 and 2018.

Now The X Files looks to be making a comeback, with Black Panther helmer Ryan Coogler developing a reboot, but it seems that for Duchovny, the role of Fox Mulder is now in the past. Speaking previously about Coogler’s new take on the franchise, the actor appeared to distance himself from having any involvement, simply saying of the project:

“I don’t really have any thoughts on it. It seems to be a whole separate project. I wish them luck.”

Related David Duchovny Would Do a Californication Movie but Thinks People May Be Too Offended

Speaking exclusively with MovieWeb, David Duchovny says of a Californication revival, “we’ve entered into a tricky place for that show.”

Duchovny’s recent appearances have included roles in the Stephen King prequel Pet Sematary: Bloodlines, and the Robert Downey Jr. TV series The Sympathizer. His latest movie is Reverse the Curse, which he also wrote and directed, based on his book, “Bucky F*cking Dent.”

We spoke to Duchovny about his film Adam the First earlier this year. You can check out that interview below.
