Jet’s Cam Muncey announces debut solo album ‘Delusions of Grandeur’ and shares soulful new single ‘Take A Chance’

Jet’s Cam Muncey has today (April 9) announced his debut solo album ‘Delusions of Grandeur’ and shared a soulful new single ‘Take A Chance’ – check it out below.

The song is the first taster of Muncey’s new album, which will be released on June 27 via Impressed Recordings. You can pre-order it here.

The new single is described as “a swirling, soulful piano-pop gem” that “soundtracks a tale of the musician’s time in his then north London neighbourhood during the 2011 London riots.”

A statement added that Muncey was also inspired and fired up to write songs following Jet’s time spent supporting Bruce Springsteen” back in 2016-2017.

Check out the new song here:

The album was recorded in 30 days and saw Muncey work alongside award-winning Australian producer Jan Skubiszewski, Jet bassist Mark Wilson and drummer Peter Marin.

A statement about the album adds: “The result is an expansive and mellow debut, packed full of catchy, often introspective songs, full of shimmering sonics, taking in his love of dreamy shoegazing, melodic guitar-pop, 80s indie, swaying soul, atmospheric art-rock.”

Artists said to have influenced the record include The Smiths, Talk Talk, Curtis Mayfield, R.E.M., Mazzy Star, The War On Drugs, Roxy Music and more.

Meanwhile, a statement from Impressed Records added: “A world removed from the up and at ‘em crunching guitar anthems of his day job, Muncey’s debut album is a daring and adventurous trip into the wild, one that explores a sonic landscape he has left untouched in his work with the band he formed with brothers Nic and Chris Cester in 2001.

“After three records, over four million album sales and a bona fide era-defining smash hit in ‘Are You Gonna Be My Girl’, Jet called it quits in 2012. Living in London with his wife and young family at the time, Muncey set his songwriting – he co-wrote some of Jet’s biggest hits, including the aforementioned ‘Are You Gonna Be My Girl’ – and musician chops to one side. The cold shoulder treatment continued when the family relocated to his native Melbourne soon after, Muncey concentrating on being a father and taking up odd jobs here and there just to give himself something to do. It was, he says looking back now, a period of avoidance’.

“But there was unfinished business where music was concerned, and the urge to write was tentatively returning. By the time Covid rolled around, Muncey had a fire in his belly. Some artists couldn’t get in the groove during the pandemic, happy to deal with the doom and gloom by bingeing box sets like the rest of us, but he got to grips with first GarageBand and then Logic and a vision for something wholly his own slowly came into view.”

‘Cam Muncey & The Delusions of Grandeur’ tracklist is:

‘Arrhythmia’
‘No Rock n Roll Star’
‘Already Gone’
‘I’ve Been Low’
‘Breathing Again’
‘Take a Chance’
‘Daylight, Darkmind’
‘You Fade On Me’

Last year, Jet made a comeback with their first single in 15 years, ‘Hurry Hurry’.

The Australian rockers played the song live on their recent 20th anniversary tour in their home country and the track eventually got a full release. It was released alongside B-side ‘Un’avventura’, which features vocalist and guitarist Nic Cester performing in both English and Italian, having lived in Italy for the past 15 years.

“‘Hurry Hurry’ is our first single in 15 years and a little appetiser while we continue to work on our upcoming album,” Cester said at the time. “We’ve been playing ‘Hurry Hurry’ live with a great response from our fans in Australia, we’re really looking forward to debuting it live at our overseas shows in Italy, the UK and the US.”

The band also headed out on their first UK and Ireland tour in 15 years last autumn in celebration of the 20th anniversary of their 2003 debut album ‘Get Born’.
