Jack Quaid
is no stranger to action, having been involved in four seasons of The Boys, with a fifth and final one on the way, but it looks like the actor is ready to take the lead in his very own high-octane action flick. The first trailer for Novocaine has been released, and the first look appears to be one hell of a thrill ride that would make the biggest fan of some of Jason Statham’s high-concept action vehicles very proud.
Novocaine sees Quaid playing Nathan Caine, a seemingly mild-mannered man who is prone to being introverted and also suffers from a truly rare disorder called CIP, which means that he doesn’t feel pain. This condition is sure to come in handy when his girlfriend is taken hostage during a bank robbery and Nathan has to do whatever he can to rescue her. In addition to Quaid, the film also stars Amber Midthunder, Ray Nicholson, Jacob Batalon, Betty Gabriel and Matt Walsh.
Directed by Dan Berk and Robert Olsen from a screenplay by Lars Jacobson, the film feels like it could be a spirited combination of M. Night Shyamalan’s Unbreakable and Statham’s 2006 action film, Crank. Crank played with a high concept that involved Statham’s Chev Chelios having to keep his adrenaline pumping to keep himself alive after being poisoned with a synthetic drug, while Unbreakable saw Bruce Willis playing David Dunn, a man who seems to have superhuman abilities. Based on the newly released trailer, Novacaine looks like it could certainly be one to watch for fans of those movies.
Jack Quaid Could be an Action Hero Anyone Could Relate To
Quaid may not seem like the likely choice to lead an action thriller, but his pedigree with The Boys makes him a prime candidate for this type of film. The trailer looks like it plays to his strengths as an actor, someone who is charming, naturally funny, and ready to throw a quip if necessary. Throwing in the added ability to feel no pain, makes him a bit of an unwitting superhero, someone who has to learn how to take action rather than someone who is naturally heroic. It might be a similar vibe he plays on The Boys as Hugh “Hughie” Campbell Jr., but it’s something he does very well.

As he returns to play Hughie in The Boys season 5, Jack Quaid has one simple request per the physique of his character.
There is also an element of the action rom-com in the film, judging from the trailer, with Quaid’s Nathan Caine stepping up to save someone who may very well be the girl of his dreams. His rare disorder gives him the gifts to do what’s necessary to save her and gives him the agency to take the risk. It’s relatable in the trailer when he says, “Do you know what it’s like to wait your whole life to meet someone, someone who gives your life meaning? Would you wait around for someone else to save her? Or would you do it yourself?” I mean come on! We all want to be him at that moment.
That’s not to say that’s why people will see Novocaine. It looks action packed and full of excessive violence and gore, something that takes us back to action movies of the past. Honestly, it looks like it has a little something for everyone.
