‘Sonic 3’ Would’ve Been a Different Movie if Jim Carrey Didn’t Play Two Roles

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 features not one but two Jim Carreys, who plays the iconic villain Ivo Robotnik and the character’s grandfather, Professor Gerald Robotnik. The stunt has been positively received by fans and critics alike, and it feels like it was meant to be from the start. But was it? Sonic the Hedgehog 3 writers Josh Miller and Pat Casey spoke to MovieWeb about the development process for the film and revealed how they landed on the decision to have Carrey act opposite himself. “There were a lot of permutations of how Gerald was going to be worked in,” said Miller, adding:

“Was it going to be like it is in the game where he’s all like flashbacks and messages he left recorded, you know, for Shadow, or would he be in the present? If he’s in the present, in what way, and what does that mean?”

Pat Casey added to that, revealing that when they got the idea to have Carrey play Gerald Robotnik, they needed to test the waters before they moved forward. “We felt like we needed him in the present, but who could play him, and we thought, ‘What if they are both Jim?’ So we sent Jeff [Fowler] on a mission to call Jim and see if he would be into it. ‘Jim Carrey, will you be two characters and wear ridiculous makeup?’ And he embraced the challenge,” said Casey. “As soon as we got word he was into it, we went, ‘This is the movie right here.'”

‘Sonic 3’ Writers Recall Being a “Laughingstock” After the Infamous ‘Ugly Sonic’ Trailer

Writers Josh Miller and Pat Casey detail how much has changed for the ‘Sonic’ franchise since that first teaser trailer was released in 2019.

With Carrey onboard, Miller and Casey began writing with the actor in mind, knowing he would add his own comedic material, which made the character very different from if they had cast a separate actor. Miller explained:

We’d have two Jim Carreys bouncing off each other, which was so fun to write about because we knew Jim was going to do it. We were laying out these scenes, but knowing he was going to add crazy gags on top of what we gave him to do, which is what you want because he is a comedic genius. If it had been someone else, we might have written it differently right from the get-go if it was gonna be Christopher Lloyd or something.

Why Jim Carrey Played Both Robotniks

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 director Jeff Fowler previously mentioned something similar, that once the decision was made to cast Carrey as Gerald Robotnik, the filmmakers had to alter the original storyline of the games to have him alive in the present-day. Fowler, Miller, and Casey lucked out in getting Carrey to return, as the actor had previously said he would be retiring after Sonic the Hedgehog 2 but later changed his mind. The actor revealed he returned for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 partially because he needed the money, but no one could accuse him of phoning in his performance.

‘Sonic the Hedgehog 3’ Writers Reveal the Keanu Reeves Easter Egg They Couldn’t Include

Sharp-eyed fans can catch at least two references to Reeves’ past roles, but a one Easter egg in particular just didn’t make the cut.

It feels difficult to imagine anyone else in the role of Gerald Robotnik other than Jim Carrey. While the filmmakers could have cast another actor or gone for a big stunt cast like Christopher Lloyd, Ian McKellen, or Dick Van Dyke, it likely would have kept the character separated from the main action. This would have robbed the film not only of many great comedic beats but dramatic ones as well, since present-day Gerald can manipulate Shadow the Hedgehog to working alongside him. It is currently unclear if Carrey will return for Sonic the Hedgehog 4, but now the bar has been raised, so the sequel will need another strong hook to justify bringing back Robotnik as a character and Carrey as an actor.
