Sylvester Stallone
has a very different view on one of his worst received movies, believing it to be his “best” and most “underrated.” Back in 2000, the action hero took the lead in an ill-fated remake of Michael Caine classic Get Carter
, but he does not seem to view it with the contempt that the vast majority of both critics and audiences showed it.
Despite delivering an Oscar-winning performance in Rocky, and starring in many other great action films, it is impossible to deny that Stallone has also produced some of the most incredible dross ever to grace cinema screens. His current movie, Alarum, has become his third movie to score a bottom-of-the-shop 0% Rotten Tomatoes score, and while Get Carter was not quite hammered into the ground to that extent, it was not seen through the rose-tinted spectacles that Stallone appears to be wearing.
Stallone’s comments were made in a social media post that celebrated the 25th anniversary of Get Carter, in which he theorized that his role in that movie was something of a “prequel” to his current role as Dwight Manfredi in the hit series Tulsa King. In his post, Stallone wrote:
“It’s interesting that 25 years ago I was acting in one of my BEST films, the underrated “Get Carter” and now that I look back at it, it looks like I was subconsciously preparing myself to play “Dwight Manfredi” in Tulsa King 25 years later! Let’s just call it a prequel!”
How Bad Is Sylvester Stallone’s ‘Get Carter’ Remake?
Let’s be honest, even the worst movies ever made find an audience, and there are some that call Stallone’s Get Carter remake “watchable.” But that is pretty much as good as you will find in the way of praise for the movie that everyone saw as completely unnecessary and incredibly inferior version of Caine’s original.
Critics pretty much annihilated the film on its release, with such comments as “How does a numbing mishmash of a movie like this get made?” from Associated Press’ Bob Thomas being repeated by many others. If you like your reviews with a little more meat, then James Sanford of Kalamazoo Gazette has you covered with this “hang-on-the-wall” deconstruction of the movie.
Is it a zombie coming to alert us it’s time to start shopping for a Halloween costume? No, it’s just our old friend Sylvester Stallone, sleepwalking his way through a stillborn crime drama that belongs in a morgue, not in a movie theater.

10 Action Stars Who Turned Down Stallone’s Offer to Be in The Expendables
The Expendables franchise has a large roster of talented action stars, but not every big name was willing to come on board.
The film scored just 11% on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer, and 28% on the audience Popcornmeter. That was the least of its worries, though, as out of its $63 million budget, Get Carter recouped just $19.4 million as its worldwide gross, making it one of Stallone’s biggest box office bombs ever. Maybe Stallone feels the movie was worth much more than it received in all respects, but it is hard to argue with the cold hard stats. However, those who want to find out for themselves can find Get Carter streaming on Prime Video in the U.S. and Netflix in most other countries.
