A feature-length interactive Black Mirror episode will soon be removed from Netflix, following a design overhaul from the streaming giant.
Released in 2018, Black Mirror: Bandersnatch was one of the first interactive stories from the service, where viewers could make selections that altered the outcome of the narrative, leading to various different scenarios and endings.
The film starred Will Poulter and Ffion Whitehead, and was set in the world of 1980s game development. It won two Emmy Awards and was praised for its innovation, pushing the possibilities of streaming technology further.
However, What’s On Netflix reports that the service has been phasing out interactive specials since 2023, as it pivots toward cloud and mobile gaming. Two Bear Grylls interactive specials were removed from the service in January, while Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt: Kimmy vs. the Reverend (2020) will be leaving alongside Bandersnatch.
The move comes as season seven of Black Mirror recently debuted, with characters from the interactive special returning for episode four. The story, titled Plaything, is set in the same universe as Bandersnatch with both Poulter and Asif Choudhry reprising their roles, although it is not a direct sequel to the story, instead focusing on a computer game journalist recounting how he came to commit murder in the 1990s.
It’s been a banner year for Netflix, with hit shows You and Cobra Kai coming a close, wrestling giant WWE coming to the platform, and new release Adolescence became a ratings juggernaut when it debuted in March. However, viewers became upset with the company in February when it was announced that subscription prices would be rising once again.
2025 will also see the release of one of its most successful series, Stranger Things, with a fifth and final season arriving at some point this year. Last month, co-creator Ross Duffer promised a memorable ending to the show, saying: “Those final episodes, the goal is that they hit pretty hard”.
