In the last few months, 9-1-1 has undergone significant changes, and the show has been finding its footing in the latest season.
You can’t kill off one of your lead characters and expect the series not to feel fundamentally different.
I wanted the series to dive into the grief and aftermath of a death that would alter the show’s very foundation.

Still, I’ve appreciated how much Bobby Nash’s loss has shaped the early parts of the season.
It’s a loss that will forever permeate the series, and I hope they never lose sight of it. But at the same time, I need 9-1-1 to remember who they are.
When 9-1-1 is at its best, it’s a character-driven procedural with grounded and powerful emergencies.
The emergencies often serve as a direct line to the characters and their personal stories, which set it apart from most other procedurals, and the characters are the heart of the show.
9-1-1 has never lost sight of that exactly.
Still, the early parts of 9-1-1 Season 9, while enjoyable, haven’t been entirely memorable or fostered the kind of watercooler conversation that punctuated so much of the earlier seasons.

Now, on the one hand, the series is aging, and as it does, long-running series often need to regroup and consider their audience’s changing tastes.
And with Bobby’s death in 9-1-1 Season 8, the series clearly entered a new era.
We’re still early in that new phase, and it would be unfair to judge it until we’ve seen more.
As it currently stands, we are only a mere six episodes into this season, and it has spent much of that time on the opening emergency.
Because of that, we’ve meandered through this break as it almost feels like the season hasn’t really started yet.
When the series returns, my number one wish would be for the show to get back to its roots.
(Disney/Christopher Willard)
And let’s plant those roots firmly in character-driven emergencies, emotional stakes that feel real and not manufactured, alongside the found family dynamics that are the show’s bread and butter.
There are some great opportunities for this to happen based on how things left off in 9-1-1 Season 9 Episode 6, with Chimney stepping into a new role, Harry joining the LAFD, and Hen’s mysterious illness. These
And that’s to say nothing of the continued grief for the characters, as well as the avenues it opens for them to pursue different personal arcs.
The series needs smaller-scale emergencies that mean something and have lasting emotional consequences for the characters.
They need character arcs that last for episodes on end, not those tied up in a neat bow after one episode and never spoken of again.
(Disney/Christopher Willard)
And perhaps most of all, the confidence to slow down and remind viewers why they fell in love with these characters in the first place.
Sometimes spectacle can run amok on 9-1-1. And it can be exciting, but it’s fleeting.
Some of the opening emergencies have been action-packed, fun thrill rides, but once they’re completed, it’s almost as if they never existed.
The cruise ship disaster was an incredible endeavor that brought forth some great story beats, but it’s largely forgotten in the series’ greater pantheon.
More minor emergencies often hit harder, even when the series primarily used them for comedic relief.
They tap into the whimsical spirit of the series, which can get lost when things get overly dramatic or when the spectacle becomes greater than the stories.
(Disney/Christopher Willard)
9-1-1 is still as popular as ever.
And as someone who adores this universe, I’m not asking them to reinvent the wheel, but to remember the rhythm and the grooves of the wheels that made it beloved in the first place.
