Young Sheldon Renewed for Three More Seasons at CBS

Young Sheldon isn’t going anywhere, as CBS has just renewed the Big Bang Theory prequel series for another three seasons. Currently, Young Sheldon is in the midst of its fourth season, and the show will now run for at least seven seasons overall. The renewal also guarantees that the hit series will stay on the air until at least 2024.

“Under Chuck Lorre’s and Steve Molaro’s deft leadership, this superb cast and gifted writers have truly brought these wonderful characters to life,” said Kelly Kahl, president of CBS Entertainment, in a statement. “Young Sheldon dominates the broadcast comedy landscape by over +2.5 million viewers and is the lynchpin of CBS’ top-rated Thursday comedy lineup. The humor, warmth and heart exuded by the Cooper family is an undeniable hook for the millions of fans who tune in each week. We’re excited to see what the next three seasons have in store for a slightly older Sheldon and all the Coopers.”

Previously, CBS gave Young Sheldon a two-season renewal in 2019 based on the early success of the show. The question that will come up in a few years is whether there will be enough story left to keep the series going for as long as The Big Bang Theory. If ratings are still strong and Sheldon Cooper actor Iain Armitage wants to say, the show could then theoretically follow Sheldon during his teenage years. In any case, there’s plenty more of Young Sheldon to come.

Young Sheldon was created by Chuck Lorre and Steven Molaro. The show serves as a prequel series to The Big Bang Theory by following Jim Parsons’ character Sheldon Cooper during his childhood. Parsons serves the narrator and the adult Sheldon and serves as an executive producer. The series also stars Zoe Perry, Lance Barber, Montana Jordan, Raegan Revord, Annie Potts, and Matt Hobby. It has featured guest appearances from Big Bang Theory stars like Kaley Cuoco and Mayim Bialik.

Something that original Sheldon actor Jim Parsons has enjoyed with the prequel is that he also gets to find out more about what happened with the character afterThe Big Bang Theory as well. Speaking with TVLine in January, Cooper detailed how his narrations have helped him learn more about Sheldon’s future that he never would have known otherwise. This includes the type of father Sheldon would have been, as this was something fans didn’t get to see on the parent series.

“In fact, I’ve already done voiceovers [on Young Sheldon] from ages that are older than I ever got with Sheldon [on Big Bang],” Parsons explained. “He spoke of his children last season, and obviously we haven’t seen that yet. I will get to hear where [the writers’] imaginations take that character… that I never would’ve gotten to find out otherwise.”

Season 5 of Young Sheldon will premiere during the 2021-22 broadcast season. Meanwhile, you can watch season 4 episodes as they air Thursdays on CBS, concluding with the season finale on May 13. This news comes to us from Variety.
