The Reapers Arrive in The Walking Dead Season 11 Teaser Trailer

In a newly released teaser called ‘Threatened’, a quick succession of images flashes across the screen showing new footage of the upcoming final season for The Walking Dead. Alongside the main characters appearing in the brand new teaser, there was one particular image that finally revealed the Reapers.

The image showed the hostile group of survivors standing together while their victims are hung upside down on both sides of the road. This arrival of the new teaser comes just more than a month ago, when a series of images were released showing brand new character posters, including Jeffery Dean Morgan’s Negan taking out a zombie. Check out the new image of the deadly group below:

As of right now, nothing is really known about the individual members of the Reapers prior to, or as the zombie outbreak began. It is more than likely that some, or most of the members of the group had military training given their efficiency in both stealth and combat. It could also be very possible that some of the members had known each other before the start of the apocalypse.

At some point following the zombie outbreak, the Reapers were formed by a person known as “Pope”, and they gradually began attacking survivor settlements and slaughtering innocent survivors on their leader’s orders, despite these groups having done nothing to the Reapers beforehand. As seen in the previous season of The Walking Dead, the Reapers had attacked Maggie’s group, despite having no previous conflicts with her group, forcing her and her surviving members to flee back to Virginia, in which the Reapers followed them to finish them off due to being “marked” by Pope himself.

The group is known for being heavily armed with military-grade weaponry, as well as utilizing stealth and ambush tactics when attacking and hunting their victims. The Reapers will serve as the primary antagonistic group on the episode “Home Sweet Home”, and the first half of Season 11. In the only onscreen appearance of a member of the Reapers, was when an unnamed soldier told Daryl that “Pope marked you” before pulling the pin off of a grenade, and blowing himself up. Thanks to the all-new teaser, we finally have our first official look, although everything else about the Reapers still remains a mystery. Be sure to also check out the new clip!

“We’re seeing that this person knows a lot of really pretty intense fighting techniques,” TheWalking Dead showrunner Angela Kang told Den of Geek earlier this year. “There’s this sort of militaristic aspect to them. There has to be an internal logic to the group and how that’s worked for them in order to get 12 years into the apocalypse and still be alive.”

“Maggie doesn’t know what [‘Pope marked you’] means, we don’t know what that means, but it’s really creepy,” executive producer Denise Huth said on Talking Dead. “I think it’s really interesting to see characters like Maggie, and Cole, and Elijah – they’re afraid. And for characters as strong and as good as fighters as they are, for them to be afraid, this is a whole other level of what they’re going to be up against.”

The Walking Dead show writer, Jim Barnes, has also shared a first look at the script for the upcoming season 11. The script has revealed the titles for the first eight episodes, as well as descriptions for episodes 1101 and 1102. The final season will adapt materials from issues #175-193 of the comic book series, and focus on the group’s encounter with the Commonwealth. The Commonwealth is known as a large network of communities that has advanced equipment and almost fifty thousand survivors living in their different settlements.

The eleventh and final season of The Walking Dead is set to premiere on AMC on August 22nd, 2021. The new season will consist of a total of 24 episodes. All of the new 24 episodes will be split into three eight-episode airing blocks, with the series concluding sometime in 2022. AMC had confirmed in September 2020 that the show would conclude with the eleventh season, while also announcing a new spinoff series involving the characters of Daryl and Carol to start airing in 2023.
