On June 26th, ChaShaMa celebrated its 30th Anniversary Gala in spectacular style, transforming a Times Square office building into an immersive arts wonderland. Founded by Anita Durst, ChaShaMa has spent three decades championing artists by repurposing vacant real estate into vibrant studio and presentation spaces. This milestone event was a vivid manifestation of that mission—interactive, chaotic, inclusive, and unforgettable.

Often described as “if Burning Man were in a Times Square office building,” the ChaShaMa Gala blurred the line between artist and audience. Over 300 performance artists and art installations sprawled across two entire floors, inviting guests not only to observe but also to participate. With attendees dressed so fabulously and on-theme, it was often impossible to tell who was performing and who was simply attending, emphasizing the Gala’s ethos that no one is merely a spectator.

The evening served a larger purpose: raising vital funds to support ChaShaMa’s wide-ranging initiatives that empower underrepresented artists and revitalize neighborhoods through the arts. Proceeds from the Gala will fund key programs including free artist work and presentation space, subsidized studios, small business support, and art classes for low-income communities.

From the wildly costumed to spontaneous dance battles, interactive video installations to surprise musical performances, the 30th Anniversary Gala was not just a fundraiser—it was a living exhibition of ChaShaMa’s legacy and future. It celebrated the idea that art is not confined to galleries or stages but thrives in every corner of urban life when given the space.
As the organization continues its mission to “connect art and real estate,” the Gala proved that after 30 years, ChaShaMa remains one of New York City’s boldest forces for creative transformation.
