Drake Calls Out Black Coffee’s DM Banter and Raises the Stakes

Ayo, Drake put South African DJ and producer Black Coffee on blast Sunday, and now everyone wants to know what exactly got raised.

The Instagram post was brief. Drake included the Canadian flag emoji with the caption: “🇨🇦 @realblackcoffee was chirping in the DM I had to raise the STAKES.”

That all-caps “STAKE” is where things get interesting.

For anyone not fully plugged into global dance music, Black Coffee is a heavyweight. He won the Grammy for Best Dance/Electronic Album in 2023 for his record “Subconsciously.” His Afro house sound has made him a fixture on festival stages across multiple continents. Outside the EDM mainstream, he’s one of the most recognized DJs in the world. His sound is rooted in South African Afro house – a very different lane from Drake’s usual hip-hop territory. That gap is exactly what makes this potential link-up compelling. This is not a random callout.

The word “chirping” matters. In Canadian slang – Drake’s home territory – chirping means trash talk. It’s not necessarily hostile, but it’s still a shot. Black Coffee was apparently saying something in Drake’s DMs. Whatever it was, Drake felt a public response was necessary. He had options. He chose to make it visible.

That choice says a lot. This wasn’t a hype caption about a collab. Drake framed it as a response. He was chirped, and now he’s raising stakes. That’s competitive language. Both men know what it signals.

So what are the stakes, exactly? That’s the real question. Could be a collaboration already in the works. Could be a creative challenge. “STAKES” in all-caps from Drake usually means something specific, not just casual expression. Drake doesn’t hit caps lock by accident.

If it is a project title, it fits. “STAKES” sounds like something Drake would name a record – short, aggressive, easy to remember. OVO Sound has a history of pulling in unexpected collaborators, and Black Coffee would be a serious get.

Drake has been deep in the Afrobeats and Afro house lane for years. “One Dance” in 2016 showed he understood the sound. He’s kept those connections alive through multiple project cycles. A proper Drake and Black Coffee record would carry serious crossover weight. It would pull audiences from two very different worlds into the same room.

The post is already having an effect. Black Coffee’s name is suddenly circulating in music circles online. People who’d never paid attention to Afro house before are now looking him up. That’s the Drake effect.

Black Coffee hasn’t responded publicly as of Sunday evening. He could clap back, or he could let whatever’s coming speak for itself. Either way, he’s been called out by name on one of the biggest accounts in music.

Drake’s been on the low this summer. No major release in recent weeks, no formal project announcement. This post might be the first signal that something’s shifting.

The comments section went predictably wild, with fans throwing out theories about what “STAKES” could mean. A title. A challenge. Nobody outside those DMs has a confirmed answer yet.

What’s clear is that Drake didn’t have to go public with this. He went public anyway. That move alone says something.
