Let’s discuss the case of Tems, who is indeed the Nigerian music star, and has also gone public to declare false the concert that was advertised in Abidjan, Côte d’Ivoire, stating it to be ‘false news’ and citing prior engagement. The reaction was immediately directed to the fans to prevent them from being scammed, and it was followed by the online audience’s response which expressed feelings of relief, disappointment, and even humor.

What a plot twist you didn’t foresee! The Grammy award-winner Tems, whose vocals are in the most popular songs all over the world, had to explain her side and argue her case. A concert announcement indicating her participation was making rounds, with the venue being Abidjan, however, the artist describes it as an enormous misunderstanding or a hoax. She was very clear in her communication ‘THIS BOOKING IS FALSE NEWS’ in capitals to the ‘Lovely people of Abidjan.’ She said, that she doesn’t know anything about this, hasn’t been approached, and, actually, is already booked for something else at that same time. She concluded her message with her signature ‘Peace and Love tho,’ along with three red hearts to signal the sadness of her being and representing us.
You would not believe that incidents like this are quite common in the quick and ever-changing world of music promotions. At times, untruthful promoters would sell tickets for a big artist, thinking that no one would notice the artist would not be present until the show is over and that the tickets would be sold during that time. Tems’ very timely stopping of this was not only a smart move but also a way of safeguarding her image and, importantly, her fans’ money. The reactions that came immediately to her post were the ones that shone the light on her post and, thus, a mini-drama was created.
Reactions were pretty wild in terms of the whole situation, to be honest. The shattered fans were the most vocal type of the groups to express their feelings, who had already spent their money on the concert. A user’s comment ‘I’ve already bought two tickets 😭’ was just heartbreaking. Another one asked, ‘Ahh, you no quick talk. Who go refund ticket wey I don buy?’ That’s the bitter truth of fake events—losing money.
A nice angle was there to be seen among the people who did not complain but rather laughed about it. For example, a user wrote, ‘U sef relax nah, make I order tems from temu go perform for there nah..’ – a joke that makes fun of the singer’s comparison with an online discount marketplace. Someone else said in a funny way, ‘Imagine coming online to see that you are on duty for the job that has not employed you.’ Humor was indeed one of the coping mechanisms.
Gratitude rather than disappointment was the prevailing sentiment. ‘Thanks a lot for clearing up the matter. I was surprised when I saw the flyer,’ one person said. Another praised Tems’ communication skills: ‘Well-done for that speedy clarification… and so delightful setting of the record straight with warmth and positivity keeping the fans informed without any dramatic.’ That’s an important point—Tems delivered bad news with elegance, which is significant.
Nevertheless, there was an unintentional box office in the comments section. In the midst of the confusion, fans started inquiring about genuine concerts. One user quite openly demanded, ‘When are you coming to Nigeria 🇳🇬 to perform?’ Another, being more charming, said, ‘When are you coming to Lagos my love?’ And in the most unexpected request, someone wanted to know, ‘When are you touring Zamfara? 🥹’ The singer’s clarification post incidentally changed into a tour announcement request.
A few responses were on the pessimistic side and even implied a deliberate fraud situation. ‘They want to use you to cash out,’ bluntly wrote one user. Another said, ‘So, who wants to cash out our Tems?’ making it clear that they believed this was an attempt that considered them to be a targeted and deliberate scam. It’s a reminder to everyone that it is always safe to check event details through official artist channels before hitting the ‘buy’ button.

Tems has been on a fantastic journey since she started her global career, creating with artists like Drake and Future; she even won a Grammy for her contribution to ‘Wait For U.’ One could argue that such fame puts one in a vulnerable position as a marketer. Nonetheless, her calm and unequivocal response suggests that she is not only aware of her customers but also of her market position. She dispelled the rumor without any flash, fuss, or force—just the truth and a peaceful atmosphere.
