Not for the first time, the Back to the Future franchise has been given the fan trailer treatment for a possible fourth installment. While in the real world it is very unlikely we will ever get to see such a movie, that hasn’t stopped fans from trying to envision what it could be like to see Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd returning to their roles of Marty McFly ad Emmett “Doc” Brown. This time, though, Tom Holland is also along for the ride as Marty’s son, Jake McFly.
Back to the Future became an instant classic on its release in 1985. A comedy-sci-fi film that made the DeLorean one of the most recognized cars in movie history, questioned the effects of time-travel on the future, and proved that sometimes first-choice casting is usually the best casting and there is no harm waiting a little while to get the star you want as your lead.
The story of Back to the Future is quite simple; a scientist creates a time-machine and, due to unexpected circumstances, his young associate ends up being transported 30 years into the past. Marty McFly’s arrival in 1955 causes a ripple in time that almost sees him erasing his own existence, and only with the help of Doc Brown can he put it right and, as the title says, get back to the future.
After two sequels, the journey of Marty McFly came to an end, with the DeLoreon destroyed, Marty living his best life in the present, and Doc having his own adventures on a time-travelling train with his new family from 1885. However, fans have not stopped wishing for Back to the Future 4, and a new fan-trailer by KH Studio is probably as close as they will get. Mashing up various clips from the previous movies, adding in some more recent promo videos and deepfaked footage of Tom Holland, the trailer is just another reminder of what might have been. Tom Holland in a Back to the Future Sequel is Not a New Concept
The idea of Tom Holland joining the Back to the Future franchise has been around for some time, originally being spurred on by a series of deepfake videos released on YouTube around 4 years ago. The videos saw Holland replacing Fox in the role of Marty McFly in scenes from the first movie, and also included Robert Downey Jr taking on the role of Doc Brown for good measure.
In 2020, BossLogic created a poster for a new Back to the Future movie, pitched with Holland as Marty’s son, who would be teaming up with Christopher Lloyd for a legacy sequel rather than a reboot. Somewhat ironically, that poster included a release date of March 2023 for fun, and now just a few months after that date, someone has used the concept, and the deepfake videos to put together a trailer. Who knows what will come next? Technology may not have quite caught up with the flying cars of the franchise yet, but it would not be out of the question for someone to go all out and put together a short fan film to scratch that BTTF4 itch.
