It’s no secret that Daredevil: Born Again would have looked a lot different had it not undergone a complete creative overhaul in 2023. The initial idea was to make it a legal procedural that completely changed how Charlie Cox’s Matt Murdock acted from the Netflix series, and largely ignored his friends, Foggy and Karen. Now, according to star Vincent D’Onofrio, it was Marvel boss Kevin Feige that stepped in to clean house, and save the show from becoming a complete failure.
Appearing on the Happy Sad Confused podcast with Josh Horowitz, D’Onofrio touched on those early days on the set of Daredevil: Born Again, before head writers Matt Corman and Chris Ord were let go. He said that while their initial idea was “great,” he and Cox just couldn’t get a handle on what they were trying to do, and the duo ended up working together to get things changed because he knew that if they didn’t, the series wouldn’t have worked the way it was.
“Between Charlie [Cox] and I, it was a collective idea, and we were making it known. I have to say that the initial writers – they had a great idea. The idea was a good idea. Unfortunately, I don’t think it would have had a chance, because we were disconnecting from the original show. Charlie and I couldn’t understand how we’re supposed to portray these characters that everybody loves within the environment that they were putting us in […] So we kept on bumping against that the whole time”

Netflix’s ‘Daredevil’ Showrunner Reveals Honest Reason ‘Daredevil Born Again’ Looks Better
The showrunner for the Netflix ‘Daredevil’ series explains the simple reason why ‘Born Again’ looks so much better.
“Luckily enough, we have a boss named Kevin Feige, and he listens to everything, and he watches everything,” continued D’Onofrio, mentioning how it was the Marvel boss that eventually stepped in to save Daredevil: Born Again after six episodes that didn’t work were already in the can. Not only were Corman and Ord released, but the directors for the remainder of the season were also let go, and Dario Scardapane (The Punisher) was brought in as showrunner. “He listened very clearly to get the diligence to get to the bottom of it, and it ended up the way it ended up.”
“But yeah, we were actively talking and communicating, Charlie and I. We needed to talk to the writers constantly every day. The initial writers. We felt like their idea was amazing, but that we were going to eventually fail if we didn’t right the ship a bit.”
Vincent D’Onofrio Teases What’s to Come in ‘Daredevil: Born Again’ Season 2
Disney+
With just two episodes remaining in the first season of Daredevil: Born Again, D’Onofrio is already looking ahead to Season 2, which is slated to release in 2026. Though it wasn’t until the sixth episode, “Excessive Force,” that he and Cox shared screen time together, when asked by Horowitz if that will change in the upcoming season and if the duo will be featured more prominently together, he replied that it’s a very real possibility; something we’re sure fans will be pleased with.
“By the end of the first season, the audience is going to have a really good idea of where the second season is headed. There is very little initially, but very soon thereafter there’s a lot of us. I don’t know what to say. I always hear myself during these kinds of questions that I can’t answer and I’m like, ‘God, this is so boring.'”
Like with any actor in the MCU, it’s always hard to get a straight answer given the secrecy they’re held to, but that’s okay. Born Again is such a great series that we’d hate to have things spoiled too much. If you’ve yet to check it out, you can watch the first seven episodes streaming now on Disney+, and look for the remaining two to air on April 8 and April 15.
