Drew Barrymore is taking her Instagram followers on a trip down memory lane to celebrate the 21st anniversary of her beloved rom-com 50 First Dates. On Instagram, Barrymore shared a sweet throwback from the film, featuring co-star Adam Sandler
. The 2004 movie, directed by Peter Segal, follows Barrymore’s Lucy Whitmore, a woman with short-term memory loss. Sandler’s Henry Roth had the romantic (and unique) task of making her fall in love with him again and again… and again. Barrymore’s Instagram post, captioned “Throwing it back” with a tag for Sandler, features the pair in costume from the iconic scene where Henry serenades Lucy with “Forgetful Lucy.”
50 First Dates landed in theaters on February 13, 2004, and was a box office success, grossing nearly $200 million worldwide. While it didn’t exactly impress critics (the film holds a 45% rating on Rotten Tomatoes), the chemistry between Sandler and Barrymore was undeniable. 50 First Dates marked their second collaboration, following The Wedding Singer (1998). Post-50 First Dates, the two reunited for 2014’s Blended (The Wedding Singer and Blended were both directed by Frank Coraci).
Fans flocked to the comments to urge Barrymore and Sandler to re-team for another project (even sharing ideas for a sequel film with potential titles, including “5000 First Dates” “51st Dates,” and “50 First Marriages.”
Drew Barrymore and Adam Sandler Could Make More Movie Magic
The throwback arrives after ongoing talks (that stem back a couple of years) about another Sandler and Barrymore project. During the 2020 MTV Movie & TV Awards, Barrymore reminisced about working with Sandler over three decades, prompting him to suggest a future collaboration.
In 2023, during the Mark Twain Honors, Barrymore shared that she and Sandler were looking for something “meaningful” to bring to the screen. While co-presenting the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor to Sandler that evening, Barrymore and Jennifer Aniston playfully acknowledged their history of playing Sandler’s love interests (Aniston shared the screen with Sandler for Just Go with It, Murder Mystery and its sequel, Murder Mystery 2). While promoting the latter film on Good Morning America that year, Aniston and Sandler discussed their desire to work with Barrymore.
Just this month, Barrymore revisited the idea of working with Aniston and Sandler, telling ET:
“I’m so busy talking to him and Jennifer Aniston about doing a threefer, if you will. I really want to make it happen. Timing is everything.”
Given the lasting friendship between Sandler and Barrymore and their comments about joining up for another feature, it’s only a matter of time before we see them together again. Adding Aniston to the mix would be the icing on the cake.
