The Oscar-winning Dune franchise is expanding its cast once again, and this time, the upcoming sequel will feature another major actor in a leading role. Directed and written by Denis Villeneuve, Dune: Messiah is set to be the third installment in the series and is based on the book of the same name.
According to Deadline, Villeneuve and the studio are eying The Batman and Mickey 17 star Robert Pattinson to join Dune 3 in a significant capacity. The original report claims it is unclear who he will be playing, but it is said to be a leading role that is by far the most important out of the available parts being cast. Meanwhile, The Hollywood Reporter adds that Pattinson is expected to portray the film’s main antagonist, likely Scytale. The character was introduced in Frank Herbert’s Messiah, making him the likely option. Pattinson joins a star-studded cast that currently features Timothée Chalamet as Paul Atreides, Zendaya as Chani, and Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho, among many others.

If Pattinson signs on for Dune 3, it would be the third major blockbuster he is attached to film this year. The actor is currently filming for Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey and is on track to shoot Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part II by the end of the year. It is a bit worrying how he would fit all of these productions into his schedule, especially since The Batman sequel has already been delayed several times. But hey, that’s for him and his agent to worry about. His Dune role would come after Austin Butler played Feyd-Rautha Harkonnen, the primary antagonist in Dune: Part Two. The rich get richer, and the Dune franchise continues to amass an incomparably talented ensemble cast.
Who’s Returning for ‘Dune: Messiah’?
Warner Bros.
With filming set to begin this summer, Dune: Messiah is looking to head into theaters on Dec. 18, 2026. But who will be returning for the upcoming sequel? An official cast has yet to be revealed, but the confirmed names thus far include Paul Atreides, Zendaya as Chani, and Jason Momoa as Duncan Idaho, while Josh Brolin and Florence Pugh are widely expected to reprise their respective roles. If you’re confused about how and why Momoa is returning as his fan-favorite character, don’t read up on it unless you want to get spoiled. But, warning, he may not be the same character we know and love.
Like the book, Dune: Messiah will likely be set around 12 years after the events of Part Two. This makes sense, especially considering the new status quo reached by the end of the last film’s credits. Audiences will be treated to an older version of the main cast of characters, far deeper into Paul’s reign as the “Lisan al Gaib.” Meanwhile, Nexus Point News reports that Chani’s twin children, Leto and Ghanima, will be featured in the upcoming sequel. Additionally, Nexus says that if Robert Pattinson joins the film as the main villain, Scytale, he may not be able to film The Batman Part II until early 2026. In Dune 3, he’d be playing the Face Dancer of the Bene Tleilax.
