- With James Gunn’s trend of spotlighting underappreciated comic book characters, Superman promises a new take on classic heroes.
No Superman story is complete without Jonathan and Martha Kent, and James Gunn has just cast his version of the characters. Ma and Pa Kent are an essential part of Superman’s origin story, teaching the Kryptonian how to adapt to life on Earth and control his powers. The pair are single-handedly responsible for Superman growing up with good moral values and not completely obliterating humanity. It appears that James Gunn has finally put faces to the beloved characters.
TheWrap reported that The Walking Dead star Pruitt Taylor Vince has been cast as Jonathan Kent in James Gunn’s Superman. Pruitt Taylor Vince has had recurring roles in shows like Stranger Things, True Blood, and Infamous. The actor has also featured in a DC Comics-based movie before, starring in the Keanu Reeves-led Constantine as Father Hennessy. Following this announcement, Deadline reported that Gunn has cast Neva Howell as Martha Kent in his Superman reboot. Howell’s biggest roles have been in the 2018 movie Burden, starring Forest Whitaker, and the 2010 sci-fi series Beckinfield.
The pair are taking over from Kevin Costner and Diane Lane, who played Jonathan and Martha Kent, respectively, in the Zack Snyder-led DC Extended Universe. Snyder’s Man of Steel also made the controversial decision to kill off Jonathan Kent in the opening act. DC fans are hoping to see more of Pruitt Taylor Vince’s iteration in James Gunn’s reboot.
James Gunn’s Superman Cast Continues to Grow
James Gunn needs to make a statement with his Superman reboot to cement it as the new beginning for the Gods & Monsters phase of his DC Universe. One way Gunn has already achieved this is through the project’s increasingly spectacular cast.
Related Superman Star Teases the Comic Book Vibes James Gunn’s Movie Brings to the DCU Superman actor David Corenswet reveals the name of two key comic books that inspired the upcoming DCU movie.
David Corenswet leads the film as Clark Kent/Superman, with Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. Opposing Superman will be Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor. House of the Dragon star Milly Alcock has been cast as Gunn’s version of Supergirl, replacing Sasha Calle who portrayed the character in The Flash. Of course, no James Gunn project would be complete without an appearance from Nathan Fillion, with the actor set to play Guy Gardner/The Green Lantern in Superman. Edi Gathegi also has the chance to redeem his short-lived turn as Darwin in X-Men: First Class, by playing Mister Terrific. Dora and the Lost City of Gold star Isabela Merced will portray Hawkgirl. Anthony Carrigan, known for his long-running role in Barry, will play Metamorpho. Skyler Gisondo has been cast as Clark Kent’s friend Jimmy Olson. And, The Wire and Suits star Wendell Pierce is playing Perry White, Editor-in-Chief at the Daily Planet.
As the list of characters suggests, Superman will continue James Gunn’s trend of giving underappreciated comic book characters the spotlight. The same can be said for the projects slated for the new DCU’s Gods & Monsters phase. Alongside Superman, The Brave and the Bold, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Lanterns, and Teen Titans, the phase will also feature some of the best and most underrated characters from DC Comics. The Authority will bring the characters from the beloved Wild Storm imprint comics to life. Swamp Thing also gets feature film redemption after the mediocre Amazon Prime Video series. The cult-classic hero Booster Gold also gets the spotlight in his own series.
