While it was met with much fanfare and expectation from the comic book intelligentsia, who always knew the character’s potential, Kraven the Hunter has been skewered by critics. While most of the bashing has been justified, there has been one silver lining to the latest travesty from Sony’s Spiderverse. Oddly enough, that silver lining has mostly come from a character other than Kraven himself.
Despite all the critical gloom currently encircling Sony’s latest standalone installment from the Spiderverse, Calypso Ezili has stuck out as one good thing about the film. A character steeped in a blend of dark magic and very engaging forms of mysticism, Calypso often stole the spotlight — from Aaron Taylor-Johnson, no less, who’s usually magnetic and easily commands the most on-screen attention whenever he’s been the lead in a film. The issues inherent in the film aside here’s a look at why Calypso is actually the perfect character to take the Spiderverse forward — that is if it continues.

As comic book fans expected, Calypso had a pivotal role in Kraven the Hunter. This was no coincidence since, following comic book lore, she certainly belonged there. Known for her complex relationship with Kraven, her penchant for chaos and destruction often sees her eclipsing his villainous rampages. Beyond this, she’s also always been an inherently cool character — from how she’s been physically depicted (usually fiendish and beautiful in equal measure) to her magical powers ranging from mind control to resurrection.
Played brilliantly by Ariana DeBose, for many years, among comic book nerds of the character, it’s actually been a coveted role that many of them have been fan-casting. In the end, despite some fans wanting the likes of South African actress Pearl Thusi to play her, Ariana DeBose has certainly done the role justice in many ways, even if not all fans agree that the role was comic book accurate.
In the comics, she’s known for enhancing Kraven’s powers but also for being far more than a simple antagonist. Her depth has seen her grow from a secondary character to an enigmatic presence in storylines that feature Kraven the Hunter and usually Spider-Man by association. As a Spidey villain, she provides a darker and more psychological edge since she never needs physical strength or brute force to hurt him. That unpredictability has often made her a wildcard and a villain that Spider-Man has found difficult to overcome.
Calypso Ezili in Marvel and Her Relationship with Kraven
With a background as a Voodoo Priestess, this side of her is usually at the forefront of her arcs. However, beyond this, she also has plenty of depth. In general, but especially to Kraven the Hunter, she represents deeper themes of obsession and darkness. The mystical fuels she uses to further ignite his inner hunter often take this side of him to extremes, vilifying him more in the process.
However, the way she pushes Kraven into cycles of death and rebirth could be said to make her the true villain. Despite this, her role is often relegated to a character who mostly operates from the shadows and takes a back seat to other notable villains. In reality, we find that Kraven is actually just a tool for her vendettas. Her dark mix of intrigue, power, manipulation, and evil intentions arguably makes her far more dangerous than he could ever be.
A Deeper Look at Calypso’s Backstory
Her backstory is mostly shrouded in mystery, part of the reason why Calypso has always been an intriguing character. According to the comics, she’s originally from Haiti and derives her power from the dark Voodoo magic. Her connection to Kraven stems from the fact that she enchants him. However, doing this is also symbiotic, as she thrives on the chaos resulting from bringing out the worst in him.
There have been elements of her past that reveal a deeper, darker, and more tragic underpinning. Marvel has revealed that she was subjected to some very harsh experiences during her early life in Haiti. This left her disillusioned with the world and craving a way to exert control over what she believed to be unjust. While certainly an antagonist, there’s far more to her story that could be explored in further films if the Spiderverse ever went on. Unfortunately, that doesn’t seem likely now.
The Missteps of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe
For a time, Sony seemed to have cottoned on to the fact that they had a virtual gold mine. Owning the rights to Spider-Man, Marvel’s flagship character, meant they owned the rights to an entire library of other interesting and popular characters, too. The Spiderverse wasn’t something Sony cooked up themselves and has been its own universe known to comic book fans long before the MCU was ever a thing. Having access to this entire world meant Sony could easily have built their own superhero dynasty around this one character and his many intriguing allies and villains.

Wait, Could ‘Kraven the Hunter’ Actually Determine Who the Next Bond Is?
With Aaron Taylor-Johnson rumored to be in the running to play the next Bond, will the inevitable failure of ‘Kraven the Hunter’ hurt his chances?
Despite all the promise and potential this held for Sony, like a child with their parent’s checkbook, Sony seems to have never fully grasped what a treasure trove they have. Sure, they did seek to use the assets this wallet held to set themselves up for the long haul. However, their execution of that vision has been atrocious. This has all added up to it being very likely that Sony’s Spiderverse is being canceled, and thank goodness for that! For any true Spider-Man fan, it’s been painful to watch legendary characters treated as cartoonish caricatures of themselves or largely ignored.
Unfortunately for characters like Calypso, this means disappearing from the silver screen again with no certainty over whether or not we’ll ever see her in a live-action film. It’s a pity, really, as Ariana DeBose’s performance showed us just how much potential the character has. With any luck, Sony will at least have enough foresight to sell all its Spider-Man IP back to Marvel via Disney, lest they risk alienating themselves from fans even more by butchering their favorite characters any further. Kraven the Hunter is in theaters now.
