Netflix’s ‘The Shadow Strays’ Sequel Gets Exciting Update From Director

Netflix

continues to deliver crowd and critic-pleasing action movies, with last year’s The Shadow Strays

being one of the main contenders. Now, director Timo Tjahjanto

has taken to social media to offer an exciting update, with the filmmaker revealing that he is working on the script, and that the follow-up will take inspiration from one of the best sequels of all time.

Written and directed by Timo Tjahjanto, The Shadow Strays landed on Netflix in October last year and is led by Aurora Ribero as the assassin known as 13, a 17-year-old trained killer who is under suspension after a failed mission in Japan. Away from the violence, she builds a conscience when she meets Monji, an 11-year-old boy who lost his mother to a crime syndicate. When Monji is captured, 13 is hellbent on setting a path of destruction to rescue the boy, including going against her mentor and the organization who hires her, the Shadow.

They also teased a sequel to their acclaimed Netflix action comedy.

The Shadow Strays was met with rave reviews upon release, landing a score of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes. While Tjahjanto now has a lot to live up to, the filmmaker has chosen a cinematic classic from which to base his sequel: The Godfather Part II. He said of The Shadow Strays 2…

“Almost finished with a story outline for 13 / Nomi’s next saga. Taking alot of inspiration from The Godfather 2.”

‘The Shadow Strays 2’ Could Be Both a Prequel and a Sequel

So, what might this comparison to The Godfather Part II mean for The Shadow Strays 2? The most likely inspiration comes from the gangster classic’s approach as both a sequel and a prequel, with The Shadow Strays 2 possibly picking up with 13 following the events of the first movie, while also taking us back in time to peel the curtain back on the mysterious organization of assassins. Here’s hoping that it works as well for Tjahjanto as it did for Francis Ford Coppola as, if it does, we could have another modern action movie classic on our hands.

As well as continuing his collaboration with Netflix, Timo Tjahjanto is all set to bring his affinity for action to Hollywood. The filmmaker, who also helmed the action outings The Night Comes for Us and The Big 4, will first take the reins of the Nobody franchise, directing Nobody 2, which will see Better Call Saul star Bob Odenkirk return as the seemingly mild-mannered Hutch Mansell, who reveals himself to be a government assassin.

After that, Tjahjanto will join forces with action movie icon Jason Statham for the highly anticipated The Beekeeper 2. Taking over the reins from The Beekeeper director David Ayer, who successfully launched the new franchise last year and achieved both solid reviews and an impressive box office, details remain under wraps, but The Beekeeper 2 will see The Stath return as the mysterious Adam Clay, no doubt delving deeper into the clandestine organization known as “Beekeepers.”
