Rumor Suggests Sony and Marvel Studios Disagree Over Multiversal Spider-Man 4 Plans

Summary

  • Sony wants to replicate the success of No Way Home by involving Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in Spider-Man’s next adventure.
  • Kevin Feige wants to keep Spider-Man in his own universe and develop characters outside of the multiverse storyline.
  • Fans believe that Sony’s supposed plans could destroy what made No Way Home special and prefer Feige’s approach.

Fans of Spider-Man: No Way Home seem to have been clamoring for more Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield in their lives since they made their grand re-entry into the Marvel franchise in 2021. However, as new reports surface that Sony is in conflict with Marvel Studios over whether Spider-Man 4 should be another multiverse epic, it seems that everyone may have the wrong idea about exactly what fans do want when it comes to the old guard of Spider-Man stars.

Franchise Marvel

Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures have reportedly begun work on where to take Tom Holland’s web-slinger in his next adventure. As suggested by popular insider Daniel Richtman, Sony are adamant they want Spidey’s next on-screen appearance a replication of the success of No Way Home, and in their mind, that means copying the things that made that movie popular and their highest grossing movie of all-time. In short, they want to involve Maguire and Garfield again.

On the flip side of this, Kevin Feige is reportedly wanting to bring Spider-Man back to ground-level and keep him very much in his own universe, with the characters that are currently being developed outside the multiverse storyline. This has been rumored to potentially put Holland’s Peter Parker on a collision course with Kingpin, or even the MCU’s version of Venom – something made possible thanks to No Way Home’s post-credits scene.

When it comes to what fans want, it seems that Feige has the edge. Despite the unanimous praise that No Way Home garnered from its nostalgic returns, which also include the likes of Willem Dafoe’s Green Goblin, fans have slammed Sony’s supposed plans as being likely to destroy the very thing that made the previous movie so special.

What Will Happen in Spider-Man 4?

Sony Pictures Releasing

Currently, there is no way of knowing what Spider-Man 4 will look like, for the simple reason that nothing has really been put down on paper yet. Despite the success of No Way Home, it seems that no one wants to rush the next movie, although it is a foregone conclusion that it will happen in the coming years.

Sony’s biggest issue right now is their own Spider-Man universe, which is set to take center stage this year with the releases of Madame Web, Kraven the Hunter and Venom 3. However, the lukewarm reception of their previous movies, such as Morbius – which had the dubious privilege of being a box office flop twice thanks to an ill-advised cinematic rerelease – and reports that Madame Web’s early projections are not looking good, mean that Sony may continue to have a problem with their universe of Spider-Man characters that still doesn’t have its own Spider-Man.

Madame Web

Release Date February 14, 2024

Studio Columbia Pictures, Marvel Entertainment, Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE)

Franchise Marvel

In the end, the web-slinging crimefighter is Marvel’s biggest and most profitable superhero, but only if he is actually in attendance. For this reason, the reports of Sony pushing for another theatrical epic would make sense, and could certainly counterbalance some of the losses they have incurred with their Spider-Man-less universe. However, while Marvel Studios have pulled back their production schedule to get their own teetering house stable again, Sony is continuing to plow ahead, and that could be their worst mistake.
