A new featurette for Mortal Kombat II has been released, promising the biggest, baddest, and bloodiest adaptation yet. The long-awaited sequel to the 2021 film was recently delayed when Warner Bros. opted to move it from its October 24, 2025, release date to May 15, 2026. Considering the first Mortal Kombat was originally set for release in 2020 before being delayed due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this franchise has developed a habit of coming out long after production wrapped.
The fan account Mortal Kombat World posted a promo for Mortal Kombat II on X, which can be seen below. The video features interviews from many of the film’s cast, including Karl Urban (Johnny Cage), Martyn Ford (Shao Khan), Adeline Rudolph (Kitanna), Max Haung (Kung Lao), Lewis Tan (Cole Young), Hiroyuki Sanada (Scorpion), along with the film’s director, Simon McQuaid. The featurette highlights Mortal Kombat II’s massive scale, the various fights, and, of course, the brutal fatalities. See the promo below.
‘Mortal Kombat II’ Will Be Bloodier & Bigger Than Ever
Mortal Kombat II has centered much of its promotional material on reassuring fans that it will deliver the ultimate Mortal Kombat experience on screen. The previous film was criticized by many for its decision to exclude the titular tournament and focus on an original character, Cole Young, as opposed to one of the franchise’s rich roster of fighters. Mortal Kombat II looks to correct that with the film being a giant match to the death, bringing in franchise favorite character Johnny Cage, and putting him front and center in the marketing.
The upcoming action sequel is certainly looking to be a bigger movie, bringing in characters like Baraka, Jade, and a resurrected Sub-Zero as Noob Saibot. Franchise creator Ed Boon revealed that the film will feel like a video game, including an on-screen tracker for audiences to keep track of where each fighter is placed in the tournament. Despite arriving five years after the previous film, and will be opening two whole years after principal photography was completed, Mortal Kombat II will hopefully be worth the wait.
Warner Bros.’ decision to delay Mortal Kombat II shows a great deal of confidence in the brand, as they have moved the film to be one of their major summer tentpoles. In fact, they are releasing it the same weekend that New Line Cinema, the same production company behind Mortal Kombat II, released Final Destination: Bloodlines, which opened to an impressive $51.6 million in its opening weekend. With Mortal Kombat being the most-watched film on HBO Max from Warner’s 2021 slate, even surpassing Dune and Godzilla vs. Kong, Mortal Kombat II is poised to be a box office smash hit.
