Robert Pattinson Teases The Batman’s Jarring Opening Scene and Film Noir Detective Story

Robert Pattinson has teased the opening scene of The Batman, with the actor describing it as “jarring” when compared to every other iteration of the character. Speaking with GQ, Pattinson has further confirmed director Matt Reeves’ aspiration for The Batman to be a detective story, an element that Pattinson was not aware is so often ascribed to the character in the pages of DC Comics.

“I watched a rough cut of the movie by myself. And the first shot is so jarring from any other Batman movie that it’s just kind of a totally different pace. It was what [filmmaker] Matt [Reeves] was saying from the first meeting I had with him: ‘I want to do a ’70s noir detective story, like The Conversation.’ And I kind of assumed that meant the mood board or something, the look of it. But from the first shot, it’s, ‘Oh, this actually is a detective story.’ And I feel like an idiot, because I didn’t even know that Batman was ‘the world’s greatest detective’; I hadn’t heard that in my life before-but it really plays. Just ’cause there’s a lot of stuff where he’s in amongst the cops.”

With The Batman finally set to introduce the world’s greatest detective version of the character to the big screen, Pattinson revealed that his Batman will make a lot more deductions and have a lot more conversations in between beating criminals to a pulp.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

“Normally, when you see Batman he arrives and beats people up. But he’s having conversations, and there are emotional scenes between them, which I don’t think have been in any of the other movies.”

The idea of The Batman opening with a “jarring” opening sequence should not come as too much of a surprise, and will no doubt help audiences ease into director Matt Reeves and star Robert Pattinson’s seemingly very different take on Bruce Wayne and his alter ego.

An Early Reaction to The Batman Calls the Movie Controversial & Complex

Warner Bros. Pictures

An alleged first reaction to The Batman has already sown the seeds of a much different vision for the iconic DC superhero. Revealed by the Editor-in-Chief of AwardsAce.com, comparisons have been made between The Batman and a beloved series of crime thrillers. “Received a text from a source who’s seen #TheBatman calling it a “complex” film, comparing it to: ZODIAC, CHINATOWN, THE USUAL SUSPECTS, THE SILENCE OF THE LAMBS Source also stating it will be “controversial” and people will discuss it “endlessly,”” the reaction reads.

The Batman will introduce audiences to an early version of the costumed crime-fighter, who has been working nights as The Dark Knight for two years. Spending his time stalking the streets and striking fear into the hearts of criminals has led Bruce Wayne deep into the shadows of Gotham City.

When a killer named The Riddler targets Gotham’s elite with a series of sadistic machinations, a trail of cryptic clues sends the World’s Greatest Detective on an investigation into the underworld, where he encounters such characters as Catwoman, The Penguin, and mob boss Carmine Falcone. As the evidence begins to lead closer to home and the scale of the perpetrator’s plans becomes clear, Batman must forge new relationships, unmask the culprit, and bring justice to the abuse of power and corruption that has long plagued Gotham City.

The Batman is scheduled for release on March 4, 2022, following a series of delays.
