The Batman Star Robert Pattinson Defends All Previous Batman Films

Robert Pattinson is gearing up upcoming release of The Batman, in which he will essay the role of DC’s most popular superhero figure, Bruce Wayne/Batman. As the film awaits theatrical release this March, the actor is actively promoting the film on a global press tour, talking about his iteration of the character and telling how he perceives director Matt Reeves’ vision for the character. Meanwhile, the new Batman personification is getting all the praise it deserves, along with some comparisons and debate over the quality of the upcoming film over previous Batman films. While a section of fans is divided on Robert Pattinson’s performance as seen in the trailer, a majority of them have extended full support to this new reboot of the Batman Franchise. However, Robert Pattinson has nothing to add up to that debate as he believes that there is no bad Batman movie that ever came.

MOVIEWEB VIDEO OF THE DAY

Talking to Total Film, Pattinson expressed his love for the character and talked about how all the previous Batman films have drawn him to theaters regardless of the actor in the suit.

Out of all the comic-book characters and that kind of movie, I’ve seen every single one of the [Batman] movies in the cinema, which I can’t really say I’ve done for any other series.

Pattinson added how he has never felt that any of the previous Batman films are bad at any level and does not let people’s divisive opinions about different Batman portrayals bother his take on the character he set to play himself.

I was always really looking forward to them coming out. There was the combination of just being so attracted to it, but also feeling like it’d had a lot of movies made about it, and none of them are bad movies. People kind of shit on some of them, but they’re not actually bad.

Batman films have been a subject of debate that may never see the end of it. The comparisons between different actors’ portrayals of the character have drawn comparisons, critiques, and at times fan petitions against casting, even when Pattinson took over the role. Batman films lost audiences’ interest when Tim Burton left the early Batman franchise and Joel Schumacher’s films saw Val Kilmer and George Clooney taking on the role. Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy starring Christian Bale revolutionized the superhero genre and gave the most awe-inspiring iteration of Batman. However, Zack Snyder’s take on Batman with Ben Affleck in the role once again drew criticism only to gain following years after Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice.

Though it’s highly respectful of Pattinson to honor his predecessors who donned the cape before him, it’s unlikely that the comparisons will ever stop at the fans’ side.

Each Batman Film Serves Its Own Purpose

Pattinson also shed light on the previous Batman films, telling how each film served its own purpose. He said that each Batman film was perfect according to the time and place they were released or set in. He said,

They all kind of completely achieve what they set out to achieve, and they’re all really interesting, according to their time and place. I don’t know. I just had a weird instinct about it. But I’ve always loved the character.

It’s true that each Batman film has had the character grow in some form or the other, thus changing the purpose of the character in each movie. Even in Nolan’s The Dark Knight Trilogy, we witnessed Bruce’s take on his values as Batman expand throughout the three films, making him more mature by the end of the trilogy. Snyder’s films on the other hand showed a Batman already past his prime, whose mental and physical state put him at his worse, which was further amplified the grief and loss he has suffered in over twenty years of his crime-fighting vigilantism.

Now Robert Pattinson in The Batman will play an iteration who is in his second year of crime-fighting as Batman and is still learning to be his perfect self. What purpose his character would serve and how he will evolve in his own planned trilogy would be a whole new experience for fans out there.

What do you think of the comparisons that each Batman film has drawn in regard to the character’s portrayal and the actors who essayed the role in each film?

The Batman stars Robert Pattinson, Zoe Kravitz, Paul Dano, Jeffery Wright, John Turturro, Peter Sarsgaard, Andy Serkis, and Colin Farrell. Directed by Matt Reeves, The Batman hit theaters on March 4, 2022.
