The Electric State is an animated science fiction film from the minds of the Russo brothers. Based on the 2018 graphic novel of the same name, The Electric State follows a young girl (Millie Bobby Brown) who meets a mysterious yet innocuous robot named Cosmo. After Cosmo reveals that they may have intel on the location of her missing brother, the young girl travels with Cosmo and soon partners with a human smuggler named Keats (Chris Pratt) in hopes of finding the jarring truth about a greater conspiracy at play.
An Inquisitive Sci-Fi Mystery
Expected for an early March release, The Electric State underwent a series of alterations ranging from casting choices to the plot itself. Hoping to showcase more of the story’s established setting, the Russo Brothers opted for major changes. Nevertheless, The Electric State stands as one of the more promising sci-fi films of the year, pairing a mystery with debates about sentience in relation to equal rights.

‘Ash’
March 21
Ash sees Eiza Gonzalez star as Riya, a woman stationed on a distant planet who wakes up to a nightmare. After finding the rest of her crew viciously murdered, she soon meets a mysterious man tasked with rescuing her. However, her suspicions get the better of her. The premise and teasers promise a riveting sci-fi horror with suspense serving as the gravity that holds the story in place.
A Thrilling Space Mystery
Alongside Gonzales, Aaron Paul and Flying Lotus have been tapped for the film, the latter of whom has been tapped for the film’s soundtrack as well. Falling in line with familiar tropes from both genres, Ash has the potential to be a truly tantalizing sci-fi horror, playing on the knowledge, or lack thereof, both Riya and the audience have in terms of what led to the catastrophe at the station. Furthermore, the introduction of another astronaut sets the foundation for a tense thriller that potentially sees the duo unravel as they inch closer to the truth.

‘The Bride!’
September 26th
Release Date
October 3, 2025
Another film inspired by the lore of Frankenstein, The Bride! focuses on the titular bride of Frankenstein, portrayed by Jesse Buckley, and Frankenstein’s monster (Christian Bale). Directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal, the film takes place in Chicago during the 1930s and sees Frankenstein’s creation request for the creation of a companion, to which the doctor obliges. Using the body of a woman murdered senselessly, the “bride” is born and the two attempt to sift through their mutual attraction, evading newly interested law enforcement, and the transformative change that takes place in the 1930s.
A Beguiling, Period Romance
Films like Bones and All excelled at taking two outcasts and creating a moving romantic piece centered around their relationship, while also offering poignant illustrations of life, both implicitly and explicitly. From the premise alone, The Bride! promises a chilling yet contemplative look at the past, making use of a familiar tale in hopes of illuminating an overlooked but profound aspect of life to audiences. Between the promising introduction and the actors selected for the film, The Bride! is a film to look forward to in the coming months.

Bugonia
Release Date
November 7, 2025
An English-language remake of Jang Joon-hwan’s Save The Green Planet!, Bugonia is an upcoming sci-fi comedy starring Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, and Alicia Silverstone. A Yorgos Lanthimos-directed film, Bugonia serves as Stone’s fourth collaboration with him. Centered around two conspiracy theorists who target a female CEO, the film’s premise suggests that the film will be a hilarious look into the troubling thought patterns of conspiracy theories.
A Comedic, Conspiracy-Fueled Race to the Truth
Lanthimos and his collaborations with Stone and Plemons have resulted in the creation of distinct, memorable, and adventurous films. Bugonia seemingly promises to be another addition to the niche film canon. In a world where people are either deeply submerged in the sea of conspiracies that flood their timelines or reeling from the effects of losing a loved one to cults centered around the belief and proliferation of these theories, there is a lot of terrain that the filmmakers can tap into.

‘Avatar: Fire and Ash’

Release Date
December 18, 2024
The next film in the grand Avatar franchise sees the familiar Na’vi community return to the big screens. Following the time-bending travels of Jake Scully (Sam Worthington) and his metamorphosis during the events of the prior film, Avatar: Fire and Ash sees the aforementioned tribe facing new foes while reeling from the effects of the recent attempted invasion of Pandora by the Resources Development Administration (RDA).
A Complex, Wholistic Look at Conflict
Avatar: The Way of Water saw Jake, Neytiri (Zoe Saldaña), and the Omatikaya clan coalesce around each other, emphasizing familial unity and the necessity of resistance against continued colonization and exploitation. With Fire and Ash, several film experts report that the central conflict will be between the Omatikaya clan and a rival Na’vi clan, referred to as the Ash people.
Given that the many conflicts in the franchise parallel real-life examples of colonialism, Fire and Ash may be a worthwhile look at intraracial conflict exacerbated by the presence of an invading force, further complicating norms and customs established prior to the RDA’s discovery of Pandora.

‘Frankenstein’
Date TBA
Frankenstein will see Oscar Isaac portray the titular, controversial doctor who aims to invent life with the help of his lab equipment and his ingenuity. Directed by Guillermo Del Toro, the film seemingly follows the premise of the beloved Mary Shelley novel. Joining Isaac includes Jacob Elordi, who has been tapped to play Frankenstein’s creation, Christopher Waltz, and Charles Dance, among others. Scheduled for a Netflix release later this year, Frankenstein is shaping up to be a worthwhile adaptation.
Centering around themes such as free will, ostracization, and demonization, Frankenstein easily resonates with both universal experiences like rejection and contemporary examples of the demonization that plagues current headlines. Much like the plethora of adaptations that graced television and theater screens alike, the film has a lot of expectations to meet, and probably exceed.
Regardless of its faithfulness to the source material or its decision to offer audiences a quirky reimagination, Frankenstein must tap into a not-so-secret third option in hopes of stunning audiences. With the talent tapped for the film, Frankenstein may very well be the gothic horror confection fans have been anticipating.
