Wednesday creators and executive producers Al Gough and Miles Millar are bringing something horrifically new to Netflix. The creative duo previously ushered in the streaming service’s most popular English-language series of all time after scoring record views for their Addams Family spin-off, starring Jenna Ortega as Wednesday Addams, but now they are reteaming with the company to develop a thrilling horror fantasy adaptation, which is set to turn the Boom! Studios comic book Grim, created by writer Stephanie Philips and artist Flaviano, into an adult animated series, taking the story from the page to the screen.
As reported by Deadline, Gough and Millar are both attached to the project as executive producers alongside Jennifer Yuh Nelson, who served as supervising director on Netflix’s Love, Death + Robots animated anthology series. Aaron Schmidt is also on board as an executive producer through Millar/Gough Ink, while Stephen Christy and Adam Yoelin executive produce for Boom! Studios, with Mette Norkjaer co-executive producing alongside Phillips and Flaviano, who, of course, know the source material better than anyone. They created the comic book series, which launched its very first issue in 2022 and was a significant success right from the offset, leading to an acclaimed 25-issue run that concluded earlier this month.
Described as “a character-driven supernatural saga,” Grim seems ripe for a television adaptation. The story centers around Jessica Harlow, a newly recruited Reaper who is tasked with ferrying countless souls to their final destination (the afterlife). However, unlike her fellow Reapers, Jessica has no recollection of how she died to end up in this situation. She starts to search for answers, but as everything unravels, she realizes that she might have a shocking personal connection to Death itself. It sounds like viewers will be kept on the edge of their seats while working to solve the mystery alongside the show’s protagonist.
‘Wednesday’ Is Also Returning for a Third Season

Netflix confirmed that Wednesday had been renewed for a third season in July ahead of the highly anticipated premiere of Season 2 Part 1. Ortega is confirmed to be returning as the show’s headlining character, along with most of the main cast, including Fred Armisen, who is expected to reprise his fan-favorite role as Uncle Fester. A spin-off series centered around his character is also said to be in development in addition to an animated Addams Family movie reboot, which proves just how popular the kooky (and altogether ooky) clan have been for the streamer as the team continues to look for new ways to expand the universe.
There was nearly a three-year gap between the release of Wednesday Season 1 and Season 2, which encompassed the dual Hollywood strikes that resulted in industry-wide delays for several major productions. The show’s sophomore run wrapped up with plenty of cliffhangers while also setting up an exciting storyline that fans have been dying to see, so many are hoping for a much quicker turnaround for the third season. It is anticipated that the next batch of episodes will be fast-tracked, with filming beginning in early 2026, which would suggest a mid-to-late 2027 release on Netflix — but fans shouldn’t hold their breaths on that happening, especially now that Gough and Millar are branching out on other projects alongside the hit series.
