Outcasts have always been a cornerstone of Tim Burton‘s work, from Frankenweenie to Beetlejuice. The theme of “fitting in” is prevalent throughout his filmography, which is partially why he has been beloved by goth kids over the years. Goth kids, like many others, often feel like outcasts at some point in their lives. Tim Burton’s films and characters are a form of comfort for all. The series Wednesday is no exception. In fact, Wednesday puts the theme in the forefront and is not shy about it.
To some extent, all of Tim Burton’s work explores making friends and fitting in, although some do it better than others. Wednesday might be the most effective because it conveys the message so directly. Season 2, in particular, sends a message very clearly to the audience that by being true to yourself, you will find people who will accept you for who you are naturally. Enid, played by Emma Myers, found her pack in Season 1, but she had to finally wolf out to feel happy with herself. She thought that was the only way she would truly find her pack. In a way, she was right, as she wants to spend all her time with the pack and be popular after she wolfs out.
Unapologetically Wednesday

Wednesday, played by Jenna Ortega, is unapologetically herself. She doesn’t have that same kind of obvious desire to have friends or to fit in. Everyone should strive to be more like Wednesday, but not in the Agnes sense (and maybe not in the vaguely homicidal sense, either). Agnes wants to be Wednesday’s best friend, but she goes about it by just trying to be more like Wednesday, even though she has some incredible qualities of her own. She dresses like Wednesday. She braids her hair like Wednesday. Later, she dons a wig to have black hair like Wednesday!
Agnes believes that Wednesday wants someone more like her as her best friend, but there are enough Wednesdays in the world. Enid and Wednesday are such good friends because they offer what the other lacks, as opposites. When Agnes finally embraces her own skills and way of being, she is accepted by both Enid and Wednesday. With the three girls confident in themselves and their own powers, they are able to join forces and save the Addams’ family.
Weird Girl Power!

Wednesday Season 2 is reminiscent of the girl power movies of the 1990s and early 2000s, which inspired teenage girls to embrace themselves fully, much like The Craft. Everyone is weird in their own way. Even normies are weird! But when people set aside their differences and come together for the greater good, incredible things can happen, and lives can be saved. Not everyone needs to be a goth, but sometimes a little bit of dark, weird girl power is what the world needs to become a better place for all. And honestly, the world is a lot better when everyone is a misfit. Wednesday Season 2 is streaming on Netflix.
