Mandy, Indiana take “a step into the unknown” on hectic new single ‘Cursive’

Mandy, Indiana have released ‘Cursive’, their latest single from upcoming album ‘Urgh’ – check it out here.

The techno track follows on from lead single ‘Magazine’ – which the four-piece first shared back in November – and kicks off with intense percussion. Vocalist Valentine Caulfield then enters the fray, singing over hectic interlocking rhythms as the song continues to drive forward without ever letting up.

Speaking about the single, synth player Simon Catling described it as “probably our most collaborative track to date,” explaining: “Whilst Scott [Fair, guitarist and producer] and Valentine often offer the initial impetus behind most of our songs, ‘Cursive’ was built up from a number of Alex’s [Macdougall, drummer] rhythmic sketches and my bass sequence.

“Valentine added her vocals later and Scott worked to sculpt these elements together. It was exciting having everyone bring their own ideas to the table from the off, throwing them together and seeing what could come out of it — a bit of a step into the unknown for us as a band.”

‘Urgh’ – which is set for release on February 6 – sees all four members of the Manchester-via-Berlin band involved in the songwriting process, with Fair producing the album alongside Gilla Band bassist Daniel Fox. The album was written during a residency at a studio house on the outskirts of Leeds and recorded across Berlin and Manchester at a time during which both Caulfield and Macdougall underwent multiple rounds of surgery.

The experience influenced Caulfield’s writing on an album that’s both personal and reflective of the state of the world, her lyrics dealing with topics including “sexual assault, systemic indifference and the omnipresence of pain”.

A few days before the album comes out, on January 31, the band are set to support Machine Girl at Manchester’s O2 Ritz. Following ‘Urgh’s release, they’ll play three UK shows in London, Leeds and Glasgow, followed by eight European dates.

Mandy, Indiana’s 2026 UK and European tour dates are:

31 – O2 Ritz, Manchester, UK (supporting Machine Head)

MARCH

NME named ‘Urgh’ – which you can pre-order here – one of the most anticipated album releases of 2026, writing: “Mandy, Indiana’s second album – and first for respected New York label Sacred Bones – isn’t for the faint-hearted. In the first 10 minutes alone, it clatters and clangs, erupts with vocalist Valentine Caulfield’s chilling howls, and takes things to the edge.

“But there are also moments of lightness, of melody, of the thrill of four people’s ideas becoming one boundaryless force, setting ‘Urgh’ up as an early contender for one of 2026’s most intriguing records.”

The band released their debut album, ‘I’ve Seen A Way’, in 2023. NME wrote that the album “glows with experimental, urgent post-punk that champions resistance and chaos,” adding: “There’s an epic, cinematic scope to the way synths and drums clash and pulse, a dark blockbuster of discordant noise. There are apocalyptic flood siren sounds, and noises that sound like a wounded creature from a monster movie.”
