The Los Angeles Chargers announced Wednesday they released pass-rusher Joey Bosa after nine seasons.
The move creates $25.3 million in 2025 salary cap space, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter. Bosa had a $12.3-million roster bonus due Wednesday next week.
He becomes one of the more notable available edge rushers with free agency just around the corner. The NFL’s negotiating window opens March 10. The San Francisco 49ers – who roster Joey’s brother, Nick – could be a landing spot, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.
Bosa recorded 22 tackles (five for loss), 13 quarterback hits, five sacks, and two forced fumbles in 14 games in 2024. The 29-year-old has struggled to stay healthy since entering the NFL, having played just two full seasons.
The Ohio State product was drafted third overall in 2016 and took the NFL storm, starting his career with two 10-plus-sack seasons, including a career-high 12.5 in 2017.
However, Bosa hasn’t recorded double-digit sacks in a season since 2021 and appeared in only 28 games over the past three years. The 2016 Defensive Rookie of the Year leaves the Chargers with 72 career sacks in 107 appearances.
