Westbrook surpasses Robertson as NBA’s highest-scoring PG

Russell Westbrook made NBA history in the Sacramento Kings’ 129-102 loss Friday to the Phoenix Suns.

The 18-year vet surpassed Oscar Robertson on the league’s all-time points list to become the highest-scoring point guard in history. He’s now 15th overall on the Association’s all-time scoring leaderboard.

“He continues to break records,” Kings head coach Doug Christie told reporters postgame. “Russ is a freak of nature. His competitiveness. His competitive drive. His spirit to continue to play as hard as he does at … Year 18 or whatever it is. Always been a fan of his. It’s an absolute honor to coach him.”

Westbrook’s record-breaking basket came on a layup with 4:23 to go in the fourth quarter.

The 37-year-old floor general finished with 17 points, nine boards, and six assists in 26 minutes of action.

Westbrook began his career with the Oklahoma City Thunder in 2008. The former No. 4 overall pick spent 11 years with the Thunder, earning eight All-Star selections, two scoring titles, and an MVP Award.

Westbrook bounced around the league after being dealt by Oklahoma City in July 2019. He’s suited up for the Houston Rockets, Washington Wizards, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, and Denver Nuggets.

Sacramento inked Westbrook to a one-year deal at the veteran’s minimum last October.

Westbrook’s points at each of his seven NBA stops

Oklahoma City Thunder 18859
Los Angeles Lakers 2268
Houston Rockets 1553

Westbrook entered Friday’s game averaging 14.4 points, seven assists, 6.6 boards, and 1.4 steals across 34 appearances this season. He’s also shooting a career-high 35.3% from beyond the arc.
